Hey PB..Should the XM Sirius Merger Be Approved?

Any thoughts on whether the merger should be allowed? Mel K seems pretty confident right now. Is there any reason why the deal shouldn't be approved?

Slant...I assume you are asking me this.

Look I hesitate to take a position that is different than what the National Association of Broadcasters might think. I am also not aware of what my own company thinks about this, so maybe I should tread lightly. I will tell you my personal opinion...but that is all it is.

I am a huge Mel Karmazin fan. Love him or hate him, you have to admire his radio instincts. He gets it, and he turns everything he is around into a winning proposition. I would never bet against the man, and since he is optimistic the deal will be approved by the end of the year, I have to be also.

And while there are those who cry unfair competition....it never really bothered me that much. When radio operators complain that Satellite radio is competing with terrestrial radio, I say..."bring it on." I have never been afraid of good competition. I think radio has allowed itself to be whored out too many times to over commercialization. Along comes satellite radio with commercial free music channels, and it reminds all of radio that we can kill the goose the lays the golden egg. Competition is a good thing. It makes us all better.

If these two companies want to merge...why not. I don't believe in government interference over something like this...which is merely somebody's choice of entertainment. It's not like they can jack up the price of home heating oil. This is just radio...and listeners have more choices now than ever before. This merger will not change a thing.

I couldn't agree more. But logic is not the determinant in these matters. I don't think this is going to be approved at least not in the short term. Maybe when either Sirius or XM is running out of cash and lying near death, then the government will relent.

I agree...hopefully more choice will mean more competition and better radio all the way around. Now that Capitol Hill seems more in favor, I imagine the merger will go through. Thanks for your insight.

Saw Mel on Fox Business Network with Cavuto saying this same thing. While he may be bluffing I don't think he wants to be embarrassed about failing either. I expect it will get done and like Phil said...it won't change a thing!

the only thing that will change is 30% of the employees from both companies will be canned and the new company will never have their studios maintained. I use to work for CBS/Infinity, I know Mel is fan of letting facilities die.

I agree that Mel is a great radio guy. He usually wins.
I am not sure this deal will win approval of the FCC. I think the FCC chairman is in favor of it, but I'm not sure about the other guys.

That said, it's hard to argue that without a merger the two companies face the real possibility of going out of business. The FCC has to weigh whether competition in the sat radio industry is more important than competition between sat and terrestrial radio.

My view is that without a merger, you run the risk of losing competition in both by having both satcasters go out of business.
Can a merger make the combined XM/Sirius profitable? That's an open question. However, it's far more likely with a merger than without one. I, for one, hope this deal is approved.

Re: Maybe Mel is trying to kill Satellite and get back in Ter Radio

Merge with XM. Kill all of the speciality channels. Chase away half of his customers and then shut it down to run Clear channel for 500 million over 10 years or something like that.

I tried listening to Sirius for the first time in a long time and for me it stinks. Rap and Rock x 50..

Worst post I've read in months.
