Did ya trip over the powercord to the myx transmitter again???

Yeah, I plugged in my hair dryer and tripped the circuit breaker. I pulled out my long orange extension cord and plugged the transmitter into an outlet at the neighbors house.

All is well!

Was there a spike(s) that went through the grid today? Things seemed a little goofy.

That darn hair dryer again huh??

I heard WMYX off the air when I was waiting for my pizza at Pizza Hut. Was wondering what happened. Darn hair dryers.<P ID="signature">______________

What happend to your super, duper, quadruple redundant back-ups? I thought if Hales Corners went off-air there was like an automatic switch-over or something to the Wells Fargo building (or am I thinking of Kiss?)

You're probably thinking 103.7. They got a 3,000 or 4,000 watt (I think) backup over at the same tower WMKE runs off of.

My transmitter is too far from the neighbors to pull that off... ah well. Live and learn, and then replace the stuff that doesn't work right.<P ID="signature">______________

Actually.. It's on the Wells Fargo building just east of Marquette's David Straz Jr. Tower (formerly East Hall) at like 8th and Wisconsin. There's 1 tiny little FM bay up on the top of the building.. I thought, though, that WMYX had a back-up on there as well.

WMKE-CA is on the tower on-top of the Hilton. I believe they're the only ones remaining on that tower.

Thanks for the info. I always thought WXSS's backup was at the Hilton. Its usually always mono when in use. The signal from it here is weaker so I usually have to pull the antenna up higher to get it.<P ID="signature">______________

So did I.. A certain engineer over at Entercom corrected me on that.

I remember when we put up that tower and transmitter atop the (then) Continental Bank Building at 7th & Wisconsin for WEZW.

To answer all the questions...

Yes, there was a big spike in the grid, pretty unusual around here.

To AC: Yes, we have backups to backups. Unfortunately, it still relies on humans to operate the switching. The human in the building last night was new, and very nervous. I ended up dialing in to reset the transmitter. I don't have all of the automatic scripts written yet for the controller, due to the impending HD project. When I finish those scripts, they will handle much of that stuff automatically!

We really weren't off real long, it just took time to figure out what the problem was and get dialed in to fix it!

WMYX and WXSS do have a backup site on top of the Wells Fargo building. WXSS is 3500 watts, and WMYX is 500. I run both transmitters in mono due to bad multipath problems to the west. Those transmitters would only come on in rare circumstances.

Now that I've told you my secrets, I will have to kill you all.<P ID="signature">______________
