Hey, South MS Guys...

Have y'all been experiencing any interference on FM the past few days? The first major Springtime band opening has been running with signals bouncing all over the Gulf (I have seen listings for many South MS stations -- and even one in Tupelo -- heard as far away as the Rio Grande Valley).

I'm wondering if the incoming signals have been noticeable.

DE

Didn't notice much incoming in Waynesboro while I was riding the band-aid bus (I'm an EMT at Wayne General EMS) but I did notice that a lot of stations out of Meridian and Hattiesburg that we're normally able to pick up were pure static.

Around Thursday of last week I was getting the Shreveport signals 5x5 here in Baton Rouge. Normally don't get North-South openings like that, it's almost always due East-West.

Sent you a PM jo-nathan.

107.9 in French Camp was killing my 107.9 in Montgomery this morning... plus 105.1 is clear as a bell.... and I was gettin my groove on to WJMI.

As Dr. Technical pointed out, Thursday was the biggest day.

Taking my kids to school here in Memphis, I was listening to 96.5 from Houston with near-local quality. That was surprising, as one would expect Shreveport to be dominant, as it is almost the EXACT same direction. Those ducts can be fickle.

Today, it was more of a SSE thing. 104.1/Mobile was back LOUD.

If one believes the maps, tomorrow could be pretty active. By midday Wednesday, this round should be over.

I didn't pick up anything here in Jackson this morning. I am driving down to Hattiesburg in the morning so maybe I'll get some more luck then.

Really good conditions around 3 am this morning for you night owls like myself.

Over 3 hours I snagged Austin, Dallas, Shreveport, Monroe, Birmingham, Little Rock and even a single station from St Louis, all despite considerable computer interference on an old and fussy portable radio. At one point Dallas' sports "The Fan" on 105.3 was almost full quieting in mono. WJOX-FM from Birmingham once again wriggled its way into our local dead air translator, and it too was 5x5 for almost an hour.

The quick list is in the DX forum, along with some mystery stations. Maybe you guys can help me out with those. ;)

This was my first DX scan of the year and it was very trying. On multiple frequencies I'd turn the antenna one way and get say, country, then turn it the other way and get DIFFERENT country. This went on with hip hop, oldies, classic hits, AFR and NPR stations. At one point I'm pretty sure I had Birmingham's WBHM 90.3 in perfect balance with WMAV Oxford, and they were about a half second off from each other. It was freaky.

Doctor Technical will appreciate that I snagged the RDS from the MPB stations in Meridian, Booneville, Miss State, Greenwood, Memphis and Jackson despite all the interference. Only the Oxford outlet failed to decode or even register.

I've been picking up TV stations KTBS Shreveport, KNOE and KARN Monroe, KTVE El Dorado and KETK Tyler, TX early in the morning. I lose them as soon as the sun comes up. If I had a way of turning my antenna I might pick up more.

This stuff often peaks a couple of hours after sunrise. Today, I was surprised to have 106.5/Houston hit in scan at 11am. Prior to that, it was New Orleans on the car radio. I live in Memphis, BTW.

There should be one more morning of this. The cold front will clear it all out once it passes.

Enjoy.

I drove to Hattiesburg this morning but I picked up nothing out of the ordinary except for the Mobile-Pensacola stations coming in a bit stronger. They started coming in around Mendenhall, which normally doesn't happen.

I haven't tackled another band scan yet, but just on a whim I threw the home stereo on 94.5 to see what was going on, and a weak but ID-able WFLF from Panama City was eeking through, so we might have one more good morning before the front moves through.

I used to have pretty good luck DXing as cold fronts moved through when I lived in Alabama but not so much here. I dunno why. I set a record for the northeast direction once by picking up a French CBC station licensed to somewhere in Quebec while driving through a thunderstorm line near Pell City, AL. (I can't find where I wrote that info down, but I think it was CBJ-FM Saguenay, totally obliterating WDJC in the process.)

I strongly suspect, Zach, that was sporadic-E, a different mechanism. That's typically -- though, not always -- a Summer thing. With E, an Alabama-Quebec path is pretty typical.

Maps this morning (Wednesday) show that the opening is on its last legs. It has been fun, but at least now I can get some work done in the mornings.

Never put off till tomorrow what you can shirk off indefinitely. ;)

Just a super quick scan and I'm getting a lot of the more local stuff from yesterday, plus Kix 101.5 from Atlanta for some reason. I love tropo, but it's weird.
