Hey! The ratings are out!

Here are my observations-

KDKA and 104.7 are right behind WDVE. Presidential election influence?

Anyone notice when WSHH goes Xmas, their ratings generally rise?

WJPA had a slightly higher rating than WEAE. Somewhere, Bill DiFabio is laughing.

Money talk on Renda didn't show up.

I think sports talk is really, really struggling and in need of new ideas.

The X had their lowest rating with Madden, Benz, etc.

WEAE is struggling with their lowest rating for awhile IN THE MIDDLE OF FOOTBALL SEASON!

WBGG showed up on the book, but it should. But based on their previous ratings the 0.5 actually looks good.

bill difabio should be laughing. his short stint as pd is now considered "the golden years." eae is bloated, overstaffed, overhyped, over hockeyed, (I couldn't resist that one) AND I KNOW IT WASN'T THEIR FAULT, BUT MADDENLESS. not to mention they, like 970, just can't reach the audience with those pea shooter sticks.......more evidence that fm all sports is on it's way......

It makes sense. FM Sports Talk 105.9, to compliment the FM News Talk. With the CC budget cuts coming 1/20, you put another syndicated GOP show on 104.7, move Ellis to 105.9, eliminate the music that isn't making the music fan happy, nor the sports fan happy because the music is so tame. I've been wondering about this move since Madden came on but didn't really see any threat of it really happening until I read on the radio-info home page about CC whacking everybody 1/20.

Potential Lineup:
6a-9a: Tim Benz
9a-12p: Dan Patrick
12p-3p: Ellis
3p-6 or 7p: Madden
nights: Hockey or some syndication

Based on what is going on it would probably make sense. Maybe a different lineup or something but off the top of my head it seems logical. Thoughts?

The question I have to ask is how much of 104.7's success is based on their lineup, and how much of it is based on their signal?

I think if 104.7's lineup was on KDKA, KDKA would be No. 1 in the market. There are all sorts of factors here- including that KDKA's signal might give it an advantage over 104.7 (YES! Even on AM!) and the fact Pittsburgh traditionally tunes into KDKA for news and talk.

But I think the 104.7 lineup would do well on 1250, or 970, or 540, or any such AM frequency if it had the same amount of promotion and such it does now.

1360- probably not. But a good AM signal- yes.

Look, let's not discount one of the reasons 104.7 was successful in the first place. When the station came on the air- Sean Hannity was growing by leaps and bounds but wasn't heard here. Same with Michael Savage and Glenn Beck. Jim Quinn had a much more natural outlet- and Ellis Cannon was being underutilized on WEAE and was given an outlet to blossom.

In other words- they had good programming.

If you changed The X to all sports- would the current crop of talent in the Clear Channel fold be able to reach the ratings- or advertising- that The X currently does?

To be honest- I'm skeptical about California's lineup getting a 3.0. I'm skeptical losing Ellis in the evening wouldn't hurt 104.7 or the teams with PBP contracts would allow it. I'm skeptical as to what would happen to 970- which may be an afterthought but still- it is at least a semi-viable station.

I'm also skeptical about what happens to modern rock? My thought is another station would pick it up and simply kill Clear Channel with it.

FM sports talk may not be a poor idea- it works well in Columbia, SC, for instance- but the current environment in Pittsburgh isn't really suited for it.

You're talking about blowing up one station (970)- wounding two others (104.7 and WDVE)- and killing modern rock for- well- what?

With the cuts coming at CC on Tuesday there is a zero percent chance of California's idea ever getting off of the ground. I can easily see a scenario where there is no live talent on the X and where Ellis too might be in jepordy. The company is going in with the chain saw this time and the results won't be pretty.

I don't see all of the flap over EAE. They are solid in their target demos and are backed by a cash rich parent company (something nobody else in the maket can really say). The network programming is good and the format is solid even if the afternoon show just isn't working out. The folks in Washington would trade bank accounts with Ardmore Boulevard in a second.
