Hey, the Summer book is out!

Very nice book for WEDG, WLKK, WGR gets its football bump moving, and even WWKB doubled its audience. WBUF is up to 4.0---have they even been that high?

WYRK was down and so were all three AC's; WJYE, WHTT, WTSS. Where did the female audience go?

WECK is on life support. Time to go nuclear there!

Thoughts?

Sum-Sum-Summertime

C'mon, WECK nearly doubled their ratings, too! This is all 12+ speculation, of course.

'BUF is actually down from last summer. The 3 ACs are dividing a smaller share than ever. In fact, the only winners appear to be 'BLK, 'KSE, Edge, The Lake, and the aforementioned 'KB. Gee, do you think that KIDS had control of the radio over the summer?

Summer books are famous for flukey numbers. That book is about as reliable from a programming standpoint as summer TV ratings. If there's anything worth noting, it's that people may have been checking out Jack and The Lake in search of greater variety that they're not finding on the 3 ACs, 97-Rock, and even 'YRK.

Station is seven months old. We're where we want to be.

WECK had good numbers with their standards format. At least it looked good 12+. Too bad as I move into that demo, it's an unwanted age group.

Yes, it IS 7 months old. ¿Did anyone truly expect it to be number 1 right out of the box? ¿Can anyone name a talk station that was number 1 in it's first bo0k? They're building an audience, and while it may be slow, at least the audience is slowly increasing, it takes time with talk radio, and they'll tweak the format with time when they see what is working and what isn't. If they're doing well in their target demos during certain shows, then I can see why they're saying "we're where we want to be". Give it a year at least to see if there is any growth before we talk about nuking the station, even that isn't much time for growth for a talk station, no matter what the frequency or power is. Granted it IS the summer bo0k which is always an oddity, but the fact that they showed an audience INCREASE during summer is a go0d sign, most talk stations suffer during the summer months.

No. But a 1 share would have been encouraging. On the upside, WECK now has a better share than its sister station, WLVL Lockport; point 7 and point 5 respectively. -BTW, nice touch on the Spanish style question mark.

We'll not know what those "target demos" look like for a while, but a point 7 Persons 12+ usually indicates a station isn't top five Persons, Men or Women 25-54, and likely not top eight, though some day parts may be stronger than others.Word is, a station has to be at least top five in the demo to get on a local or regional agency buy these days. Wouldn't be hard to see that requirement shrink to "top three" given the tightening economy. Arguably, it wouldn't be hard to see stations going direct to the client to make their pitch. Eff the agencies! The "tweaking" argument is debatable. WBEN and WGR are in stride, given each does well in the Fall book. With the presidential election and the House up for grabs, WBEN's nut job right wing base will likely drive ratings to an 11 share as Beach and Bauerle serve up the vitriol and Kool Aid. KB might even get a bump from its left wingers. Sabres on WGR will revive that station's sagging numbers as well. It may be WECK will look at the Fall book and go beyond "tweaking" the format.

Give it a year at least to see if there is any growth before we talk about nuking the station, even that isn't much time for growth for a talk station, no matter what the frequency or power is.

A year surely will be a better measure of the station's progress. Do you think they have that time? Just askin'.

I think that a station like WECK is less about massive overall numbers than it is about what Green and his people can sell. Not every sale is about big ratings. It can be sold for emotional reasons. The local, hometown brand can be the hook.

I think Tom & Dick understand that they won't be knocking off WBEN anytime soon.
Just like I am sure that my little public station isn't causing Mr. Wenger any loss of sleep. But, for what we are, we think we're rather successful.

It's a matter of scale, I guess.

Al I think you have the right idea. We get trapped into the mindset of the big groups that are all trying to be in the top 5. Thanks for bringing us down to earth.

If WECK sells ads and those ads work then it's a success.

Given that WECK new format isn't very old I believe this is their best showing yet. I think perhaps though the station should experiment soon with having Riter on during drivetime. He's an entertaining persona and would be interesting to see if could go up against the pompous, past his day Beach. Probably would be better than having O'Reilly in the afternoons, at least in my opinion.

WLVL's loss could be attributed to the loss of Hannity, although the loss wasn't that great and WBEN probably didn't pick up any new listeners with their addition of a rather vile persona.

Let's not forget that with pending eliminations at Entercom, especially any at WBEN, there could be an influx of talent at WECK.

Presuming there's money in the WECK vault to pay those ex-WBEN folks.

True that, but with the economy in the tank, can advertisers afford to make emotional decisions? WECK's rates may be one-fifth of WBEN's, but WBEN is doing everything possible to knock WECK out of the box and advertisers may not have the money to buy both stations.

I would bet any displaced people would be willing to negotiate!

Unless you mean $0, in which case that might be a tough sell.
