Armstrong left Channel 2 in either Oct or Nov to work as the announcer for an auto racing outfit. I'm not sure, but I think he may be a partner in the venture. I think his contract ran out and KPRC did not renew it. Like you, I was a Don Armstrong fan and know him through some fine folks that worked with him over the years. It was just another in the many on-air personnel blunders KPRC created during the past year. As an aside Channel 2 is on their 3rd General Manager since the summer. They have turned over many managers, reporters, anchors and underlings in the news and sales departments since the top management changes started. The new GM they have now is one of Post Newsweek's stars from Jacksonville where he did a pretty good job of positioning an independent station with a large news dept into decent ratings. However, moving from a small market to Houston (top 10) doesn't guarantee success. Just look at Channel 26. They brought in a GM from small Memphis in 2000 to replace the legendary Jerry Marcus. The small market minded GM at KRIV proceeded to practically destroy the station's credibility and marketablity with his small market thinking. To this day, KRIV has no website. How many major market O&O stations are without a website today? This just goes to show you that replacing top management in major markets with small market managers does not alway bode well for the station. That may explain part of the reason Don Armstrong's contract was not renewed. The small market management team doesn't understand the benefit of consistency and longevity in a major market. Small market managers are constantly making changes because their people keep moving on to larger markets. That's why you see great people like Armstrong get the boot. My prediction: KPRC will continue to see turmoil for the next 5 years or more.
