I think WLEE ranks up there with WABC and CKLW, but small markets get no respect. If there can be nostalgia sites for KQV (Pittsburgh) and WHK ( Cleveland) WHY NOT BIG LEE!

Hi Chris...
I've been out of radio, at least here in Richmond, for nine years now, so I don't know how much I could contribute to a discussion of the current state of radio. But it would be fun to talk radio again...maybe with a beer or two.
I still haven't heard your show. I need to remember to check it out online, as I can't get 1450 out here. It sounds like a lot of fun.
Oldiesgal, yes there was something special about WLEE. I'll never forget working there, having listened to it in high school. I felt honored to be a small part of it.
Over the years, I've become sort of the unoffical historian of 1480/WLEE and thanks to Steve Hendrix here, there's now a Yahoo group for us old WLEE alumni. I can see a website in the future sometime. If I had any clue about how to do that stuff, I'd probably do it. I've got lot's of pictures and many pieces of memorabilia.
And thanks for the kind words, Iloveradio. I'd love to take all the credit for WVGO, but I really can't. It was the perfect storm, as it were, as I met John Crowley by chance at my video studio when he was selling for WRXL, and after many more meetings and more than a few beers, an idea began to take shape and the pieces sort of fell into place...in an almost uncanny way. Add in Steve Forrest, Buck Allbritton and Dal Hunter to the mix, and we came up with something together that was a bit off the beaten path at the time....
I believed in it so much that I, quite literally, bet everything I had. My willingness to do that is what gave us the power to answer to no one else as to the format and operation of the station. Richmond's structure was not like the other Benchmark stations at all, and from what I've read, that was probably a good thing.
There's a neat story on WVGO at Richmond.com from 1999. John is interviewed and recalls the good old days there. Fun to read if you're interested in more of the background and history. Here's the link:

I must say (as I say about once a month), I miss WVGO. Even though my musical tastes were more in tuned with the Buzz at the time, I found myself listening to it more and more until it almost became a clone of the Buzz. Nowadays, I realize Sirius First Wave just doesn't cut it.

I've always wanted to start up a internet station (Esp. a WVGO-type)...hell, if I could find the money to stream online, I have a dedicated computer I could contribute to a resurrected 'VGO. I also have quite a bit (300-500 songs) of WVGO-type music...

Just one of those crazy ideas...I'm also planning to make a Wikipedia article on 106.5...I have already made articles on 101.1 and 102.1
______________

> You're so welcome... Don't be too surprised if I put your name into the hat for the RBHF Lifetime Achievement honors spring '06. You deserve it. My wife grew up just a couple of houses away from yours on Nasselle. She told me she had a crush on you, it was either you or your brother lol. She couldn't remember which lol, and I am closer to your age, and Mark is to her's. I am twelve years older than she. lol Must be a thing for older men...lol I worked with Mark @BT in '85. I believe we've met in '96, or '97, At a RBHF luncheon. I finally met Shane there too. [the only other time I'd seen Max was a Freakish Five game...Wow,that was a long time ago!] I liked all of the DJ's @Lee, but he's the one that sparked the most interest in broadcasting for me. Like I said before... Three Cheers to you Guy Spiller have a Harvey Hudson endorsed White Tower [that's if you can find a white tower around these parts anymore lol] cup o'joe on me..lolol you said beer...ok a couple of beers on me! lol, and tell Steve I said hey... he and I chat often...lol best of luck with the website as well... can't wait to see it... oooh got any airchecks!!! I gotta ask...why....why didn't Nationwide take W-Lee to FM to challenge the up and coming Q94... Big Lee was #1...$$$$$ or just no interest in FM.lolol
Cheers, Lou

I think only non-commercial radio could support a WVGO
>Pacifica stations are the closest I could find, although WBBY in Tampa, now a cloned classic rocker came close.

Isn't that what was said when WVGO started?

Ah yes.

If only this was the 60's again, we could have WGOE! Now THERE was a progressive little AM underground station. Totally album oriented rock. I remember the letterhead on their stationary and envelopes was a POT PLANT! No kidding! The only station in Richmond to play Roxy Music album cuts. And they used to mention WLEE and other competition all the time. I recall Ken Bouton one afternoon raggin' on Bob Canada at 'LEE, welcoming listeners to WGOE after Canada ran them off from 'LEE with a suck ass song that Bouton would mention Canada had just played. And WGOE did the very first AM stereo experiment one day, sharing their left channel with WRGM while they played the right channel and invited listeners to set up 2 AM radios on both sides of the room tuned to each station.

GUY probably remembers more about WGOE than I do. Not because he's older than me. I'm older than he is. Probably he would remember more because I have more burned out brain cells...FRIED actually!
______________

Man, that sounds like a good radio listening time. What fun that must have been.

It's always nice to to read that we are more alike than different.

Still, I continue to believe, that if given a chance to exist, a station such as WVGO or the glory days of WFHS in DC were around today, it would be wildly popular with both listeners and advertisers.

Also, I'm sure that radio professionals back when WVGO started were sure the station would fail as well. Am I wrong?

I love Roxy Music too, Steve. Have you heard the new Brian Eno record? It's more than worthy of your listening time. You can hear it and old Roxy Music on my show...

Anyway, I'd love to hear what WVGO would have to say about all this....

I still think the best radio stations in Richmond, for my tastes were (are) the following

1) WRNL in the early seventies
2) LEE in its hey day
3) WGOE under Jack Alix
4) WTVR-AM as 'All Request Radio"
5) WBCI in Williamsburg when it was the only AC station with any Richmond coverage
6) WVGO as Oldies 106
7) WRCL as "Cool 106.5"
8) WQSF as soft AC
9) WBBT as the "Beat"
And my two all time favorites

EZ-104 as soft AC
LITE 98----- my opinion of great radio and I'm dead serious and stone cold sober as a matter of fact. I love Soft AC mixed with oldies and I think Bill Bevins is really good. I guess that makes this a blond moment in radio history to all youse metal dudes.

I Can't think of anything you left out. I never understood why WBBC dropped AC? I remember most of them except the one's in Lynchburg/Roanoke. Probably the dumbest thing was WJRV. You did forget WSMJ, WBZZ, and WMXV. But my big question is-------what radio names did you use? I lived in the "Holy City" from 1970 until 2001 when I went to mighty Tampa Bay. I'm not using the name I used in Richmond either since my sex change!. I wasn't in radio, but I knew Philly Phil. Actually I could have been in Radio, but Delilah hadn't been invented yet.

Wow...so my guess was right...I always thought WBBC did a time as AC...when did they stop?

I would love to know more about the "old" WBBC...any memories?

It was totally automated soft AC. They must have used a service. Nothing was local. The signal came in very well in Midlothian . I never knew why it never showed in the Richmond books. I think it could have been a player, but instead was programmed like an automated jukebox, before the consolidation of radio and vt'ing or the current totally jockless trend of COX and Jack formatted stations.

'73-'76 w/WRGM [JA-radio show as WJAR Junior Achiever's of Richmond...all thru HS], a disco lounge DJ summer of '78 & w/e @ WRAR, & '86 WENZ Louis Power...my name! On WENZ my brother went by Jason Edwards. They were having $$$$ problems other airstaff wouldn't show or quit. We were unaware of the $$$$ problems. Until they hit us several month's later.
I worked the 4pm-12am shift, Chilly Breeze quit. I'm moved to overnights. Jason moved to evenings... The morning guy Jay Martin quit. Jason would come back in at 6am [or sleep on the sofa until then] then he and I produced "The Get Up and Go Show" ending at 10am...
I'd DJ some parties near the end of HS... Jason took it from there. Jas,and Dr.D [Jim Dalton] have been DJ'ing parties and weddings about 26 years now... in fact they were the entertainment for [late] Bob-a-Lou's daughter's wedding reception this weekend. At night, he'd answer the phones for Slam Duncan, and David Lee Michaels. Do you remember any of those... interesting note! In 1973 WGOE moved American Top 40 {that show debuted in Richmond on WGOE) up against our HS show... When I moved to Richmond, WENZ appeared to the leading R&B station only because it was full-time. I remember that WANT probably would have trounced them at 990 if they had full-time status. Sadly for both of them, WPLZ went R&B and left them both irrelevant because for the first time a city over 60% African-American had an FM targeting that demo. Although 99.3 was rimshot, it was the best it got until WCDX gave up Hot AC and made the switch. I helped plan promotions with the air staff of WPLZ to promote the City of Richmond Job Fairs in the Eighties. I also knew Micki Spencer, but that was really back in the day. Of course I remember Slam Duncan and David Lee Michaels. I came there in 1970 and left in 2001. I do rember Casey on WGOE and moving to WRVQ. You also left out WRFK . WMXV shoulda been WVMX. Unfortunately I appear to be a minority in this board because I never liked WRXL , the BUZZ,or WGOE as AOR. IN fact I dislike AOR, Heavy metal, Alternative, and much of classic rock. I have always preferred AC and I am most familiar with that format. I guess I'm a drip.

I see Micki almost every Saturday. Slam is on-air J-93.5 in Roanoke.
Slam & I met at a Highland Springs Elem. Spring Carnival... We both took turns in the dunkin' booth...loads of fun... I didn't forget WRFK. WVMX I don't remember that station. I started listening to the various radio stations around '68. Wanting to become a DJ around '71. Actually getting the chance '73 with WRGM. Broadcasting's been in my blood ever since. My Brothers and sister were on TV in '70. Speed Swift and Sooperdog kiddie show... I was 13. Sailor Bob was also my childhood favorite 1962! Another favorite Charles Fishburne and The Scene Tonight news team...but all that's the TV side of me...
______________
