I know some of you folks are rather new to shortwave, which although not as busy as it once was, still offers up some interesting stuff.

If you have the single side band (SSB) function, you can catch some aviation chatter right now. At this time New York ATC (along with the aircraft they are in contact with) can be heard on 8906 kHz, while Santa Maria (Azores) ATC can be heard on 5598.

I have heard some talk on 5550, 5598, 5616, 8846, 8906, and 6577 all on USB when I did some occasional HF monitoring. Didn't get a chance to hear anything last night.

RAF Volmet is on 5450 kHz USB, while next door, I hear AFN on 5447 busting in.

Sean Hannity is currently on AFN, whining about the 'Canadian geese', on Long Island NY, repeatedly misusing the proper name for them (They are Canada geese, Sean!). He's also wondering if they are edible, that maybe they could kill them and feed them to homeless people. ::)

Some years back, I had an HF transceiver in my office in the Philippines, and if it was not being used for its intended purpose, I kept it on 21985, San Francisco Radio remoted at Guam. High enough in frequency so there was very little atmosphics. It was a daily daytime frequency but not listed on the charts of the era. I only ran across it by listening to some of the other ATC operations and noted it as a handoff freuqency.

Interesting to hear the Air Mike (Continental Micronesia) flights island hopping between Hawaii and Guam.
 
I can also hear the 6604 here in VA. This thread reminded of me of something, when I told someone at work that I heard a pilot on 5550 kHz, he told me I could go to jail for hearing the signal, probably thinking it was illegal, but if it is really illegal ...I would stop.

If illegal, I guess there are a lot of us with both HF receivers and VHF and UHF scanners who are illegally listening.
 
They usually block out on the radios the frequencies that they don't want you listening to.
Of course radios can always be modified.
 
It appears to be that no shortwave receivers with full coverage up to 30 MHz or higher, do not block out certain frequencies; I do know that scanners and wideband receivers block out cellular frequencies.

That's what I meant & should have stated. Most cellular stuff is way up the spectrum.

You should also be able to get Shannon Volmet on 5505. New York is an easy catch on 6604, also can be heard (especially during Winter) on 3485. During about 1/3 of the hour, New York flips off and it's Gander, NF that you're hearing :)20-:29 and :50-:59). Gander is often weaker, though it can surprise you. As I get all of the above in northern IL, you should be able to get them just as well in WI.

Back in NH, I'd often get not only Shannon and New York/Gander, but also HF ATC from New York and from Santa Maria in the Azores. The latter would come in shockingly well.

When in UT earlier this summer, I was treated to not only New York and Gander, but to weak signals from Shannon and Honolulu. I've NEVER gotten Honolulu from anywhere east of the Rockies.

This jogs my memory regarding a question on the old 3rd Class 'phone test. As I recall, you can listen, but it'sunlawful to disclose the contents of what you hear.
