HHB FlashMic - opinions wanted

I have a client who's asking about the HHB FlashMic to replace their old Marantz field decks (yeah, they've got both cassette and MD... talk about dinosaurs!). Anyone have any firsthand experience with these? What can you tell me?

NIce Mic but fragile. We've had four, but we are down to one left working. They are expensive to repair if at all possible. The $99 Zoom H1 does just as good a job and sounds as good. x/y mic gives you true stero should you want. Our production director figures a lot of these will be used to record bootleg concerts! List its $159, but BSW sells them for $99. You could buy 4 of the Zooms for the price of one HHB. You could buy 2 Zooms for what it cost us to repair one HHB.

Really like the Marantz PDM 660 model.Great build and sound quality.Zooms are good, too.client i have using the HHB has not been pleased.Shortly after the warranty expired so did it..We take the 660 on location for political spots.etc,,use an akg 4500 mic.studio quality.clients love it.

There's no doubt the Marantzes give good service. The MZR30s just keep soldiering on, but the media's obsolete. Plus, there's an appeal in having just one piece of gear to tote around :) But 660 is a good product. We may wind up going that direction.

FWIW a few months later... I really like the Maycom Handhelds and I think more people should check them out. I think they're actually way better than the Flashmic and I've used both at work. Sounds great, great pre's for the built-in mic as well as the external mic input. Only hassle is they use a proprietary connection for line/mic inputs but whatever, it doesn't really bother you once you have a cable that fits (and a spare). Overall they've got good features (like pre-record buffer) and it's a broadcast-specific brand that know their sh*t. Gets no press whatsoever though. But they're popular in Europe, especially Austria. Germany, their homeland Holland etc. And by God, if it's good enough for the germans it's sure good enough for the rest of us.
