Children, children...let's play nice! Who woulda' thunk such a harmless-looking thread could cause so much rancor?
Allow me to express a couple of facts and one opinion.
Fact: HHH is a good talk show host, particularly for what he does. He is a middle-of-the road host (despite BRN's inference that Hal is conservative), whose job is to make us want to hear what is next, then plug in a stopset while we are waiting. He generates tons of revenue, keeps all sides of an issue relatively happy, and returns decent ratings. No big controversies, no breaking news out of the gate, and no stratlingly high ratings spikes. Steady, dependable, profitable, but, unfortunately, somewhat predictable. Some listeners, me included, prefer more meat on the bones, more provoking of thought and opinion, but he does what his bosses want him to do, and deserves credit for that.
Fact: CP and Walker were, for their time, a world class team. Created record ratings from scratch in a medium (AM radio) that was starting to gasp for breath. Compared to HHH (in a totally different time), they were less-than-steady (for good reasons..it was part of their sthick), edgily dependable (they showed up, but were unpredictable...it was part of their schtick), and profitable. CP&W vs. HHH? Different times, different media, different goals, but mostly very successful.
Dems da fax....here da opinion: Knoxville is a better radio market for having had both shows. (I would have loved to see what CP&W could have done with HHH's advantages of Dick/Citadel's deep pockets and Pirkle's flame thrower coverage area. Compared to HHH or anyone else, they would have been topnotch.)
Finally, I can't help but wonder who among the writers on here have actually stepped into the control room of a radio station where their entire career was on the line every day of their life, having prepared a show outline, but prepared to deviate as events may dictate, and gone up against a few other hosts or teams who had done and were prepared to do the same thing in the same town at the same time. Walking the walk is a lot more demanding than talking the talk.
For someone who has never been on the air in a competitive situation to come on here and criticize those who have is unfair, if not absolutely foolish. Quoting someone's ratings when you have none of your own is cowardly. Slamming someone who has done the deed while hiding behind a pseudonym? (sales execs can look that one up) is pitiful and bullyish!
Ain't this FUN???
Love,
BB
