Hi everyone,I'm new here and hope my post's and comments are appreciated

I'm addressing the TV charity ads that seem to annoy many people myself included,First is the ASPCA only the national group, after fact checking,as I do daily on many things,I found out that these ads and donations only go to one group .the national ASPCA,and despite all the horrible videos, this so called charity does not share with the local chapters,so please research this yourselves, the $20 a month goes mainly to salaried high up employees and more commercials, not much helps the animals themselves, sad but true ,the other is Shriners again the national Shriners, these ads imo are excessive, and play on poor people, and are designed to make people feel guilty, simply because they're not a sick child, also the continued use of Alec, who is now well into his 20's , and a millionaire, are imo just awful, especially the one where he's grooming Caleb , another boy , and notice all the attention on the commercials goes mainly to boys??? it's creepy imo and at times I have channel surfed from one to up to 3 ads from them at once!again research this national group , especially if you are poor or borderline as their are many more children's charities that your money will go much more to help them and they dont force you to see the same ,now adult, spokesperson, while he grooms the younger boy on a zoom like chat, I've seen these topics on other sites and I'm being gentle compared to many,im a disabled 60 year old man and unfortunately, watch to much and its antenna TV so tons of commercials a day, thank you to anyone who sees this post!

How about the commercial talking about how the ice is melting and the polar bear is losing it's hunting ground (ice) but you can help for $20 a month. I want o know what that $20 does. Do they deliver ice to polar bears to increase their hunting area? You know polar bears are quite good swimmers and sure don't mind a dip in icy waters. You're sure not going to capture them when you're on the polar bear's broad menu. That's why folks in such areas carry a gun in case a polar bear can't just be scared off with some yelling and banging stuff around.

My only suggestion is to use more punctuation than just a comma and format things into sentences/paragraphs. I mostly agree with what you said, but it gave me a headache to read.

Regarding the OP, there are a few websites one can go to in order to check out charities they're considering donating to, to find out how much they spend on advertising, administrative costs and other expenses, and bottom line, how much from every donation actually goes to help the cause those organizations are claiming to help. Some are very good, especially more locally-based charities and those who use mostly volunteer labor, while some others have very poor ratings.

Regarding your comments about the commercials, while I don't necessarily disagree with a few of your comments, at the same time, these types of ads aren't going away anytime soon - same with those from Disabled American Veterans, Wounded Warrior, St. Jude's and a plethora of other charities. Also, this website you've come to is primarily to discuss the business of radio and TV broadcasting. The axe you seem to want to grind here, while it may get some replies and be fodder for some discussion, isn't going to help you resolve anything or "improve" the situation you've posted about, if that is indeed your end goal.

What I'd like to learn is just what is it that 'preys on the poor' in the Shriner's commercials?

Shriners and many others are P.I. spots meaning the TV station or network airs the spots free but gets a commission on each donation from their coverage area (used to be done by zip code). As I understand it, the station gets virtually the whole first year. It seems lots of these charities work on the concept that a monthly line on your credit card or bank statement will be overlooked, small enough or forgotten for many years to come.

Those 800 Number spots are the same, P.I. spots, with a commission paid the station for each item sold in their service area.

The poster does say he is disabled. That may factor into his problems with written English.

i didnt catch that, so my apologies.. i read the post... and tried to follow along.

I’m a former English teacher; however, I am sure some folks have detected my errors along the way. I just try to focus on content, unless very poor grammar and punctuation skills truly obscure the message. If and when I do make such mistakes, please call me on it.

Why would anyone critique a new member's first post on grammar?
I am sure the "good English police" could arrest a lot of folks on this site, including me.

The interesting thing is that those who seem so bent on trying to correct others on minor points like grammar and are overly critical of how and what and the way in which others post, tend to be ultra-defensive when others dare joke about something they themselves have posted, or a comment they've made on this site. Doesn't make a lot of sense, and that type of behavior usually points to maturity - or a lack thereof.

Maturity and… recognition of the fact that there are more people in the US today, both in number and percentage…than ever before whose birth tongue is not English.

I used to be one of those who could be somewhat harsh and critical regarding English usage.

Then I started learning French.

Ooooh boy.

I think I will never get to the point where I get everything right in that language. Unlike English or Spanish, which often provide alternate approaches to saying the same thing, in French, there usually is one and only one correct way of expressing something. There's also the difference in the level of expression that one is trying to go for.

So I realize that showing people some tolerance and giving them some leeway is probably a good thing.
