HI-FI CLUB LEAVING 1360; SEEKS NEW HOME

Here's the standard press release...

"The Hi-Fi Club" is losing its terrestrial home at KMNY-1360AM in Dallas-Fort Worth, and we're looking for a new outlet in the local area to carry us. KMNY is preparing to lease out all of its overnight hours to an ethnic broadcaster, effective October 1. Our final show at 1360 is this Sunday night, September 24, from 6PM-8PM.

The show is probably best described as "oldies/talk," with lots of DFW radio history, music history, historical news stories, and a great mix of 1955-75 "AM Gold" music. It's hosted by me and two other radio-heads who do this for the love of the industry and to give long-overdue credit to those who paved the way before us.

We've already established a loyal audience, and have gained respect from some of DFW radio's best...recent guests include Bud Buschardt, George Gimarc, Norm Alden and Bob Schieffer.

The show will be offered on a free/barter basis, and runs two hours. We would like to continue to do the show live from the originating station, and it's critical that it be streamed over the web. Also important is to have the freedom to talk about other stations in the market, past and present, competitor or not!

Seriously Mike, and publicly allow me to thank you for allowing me to be part of the venture. As I said, I only wanted a night and we rode it at KMNY for three months.
It was great to bring back not only the old guard from KXOL but KLIF, KBOX and others.

As our sounder said .."on the Hi-Fi Club, the ledgends trully never die"!

It was great to hear Bill Ennis ON THE AIR, Jim Tucker ON THE AIR. The old commercials, etc.

What a fun experience in radio it has been!

Now let's see where the ol' trail leads now! ;D

Sad to hear. Would KAAM step up to bat? They are an oldies station and they stream. Also, anyway to hear any of the shows you've done to date?

KNON? a nice idea, but it wouldn't fly there. Ask George Gimarc.

KNON is mainly about targeting the "lower-moderate urban" income crowd. Trust me, I helped start the teen talk show WAAAAY back in 1997 and got canned because I didnt match their "demos" (i.e. white male, early 20's with earning potential of 50k+/yr). Plus, you also have to beg for money every three months during "pledge drive".

KNON is on the list, but I'm still pursuing other avenues. Shouldn't be long...we'll stream in the meantime if nothing else comes up right away. :)

Mike, keep us updated :)

I know a person that's had negative dealings with KAAM fairly recently, on a somewhat similar project. While the show would probably be a great fit, I don't have the sponsorships to walk in with, and I refuse to pay for airtime. A barter relationship would be just fine, but not all broadcasters see things that way (and understandably, as the blocks of sold time on the weekends usually pay for the weekday schedule.) I'll gladly run it by them, but without any expectations. And, with me doing this for free, and with no expectations for it to ever be a cash cow, I expect to keep creative control and do things as I think the listener will want, which does include talking about other stations and making commentary and observations as I see fit. Not just any station would embrace that!

I do have two commitments; one is for the show to run on North Texas Radio for the Blind, but of course, their signal is on a sub-carrier, so this would be an affiliate-type relationship...but would serve about 3,000 listeners. The other is to stream the show all day long (repeating every two hours) on a Sunday. In the works is a terrestrial station that also streams, and I'm waiting to see if they have an available slot and are ready to go with it. Ultimately, the show could run on all three sources, as none have a problem with non-exclusivity.

I'm building out a studio to do the show from, so if things can get sewn up fairly quickly, we should be back on in some form within a couple of weeks. Stay tuned! www.thehificlub.net
