Hi Fi Club on 1360AM

Hmmm....If you want my 2cents and ONLY my 2cents. Get organized and the show will come together. Frankly I tuned in to pick it apart and ended up being somewhat entertained. One of you made a good point, radio is supose to be fun and that is what you guys seem to be doing. Not going to say you converted me but you got my attention now.

Yeah, the organization part fell apart last night. The station had problems off and on all day due to transmitter problems, and apparently some other issues developed in the board as well. Strangely enough, the stream came out just fine, but the on-air product had lots of glitches. The heat in the studio was horrible as well, so those things came together to get us a little rattled last night! (Yes, we're air-conditioned, but with huge plate-glass windows that face west.) Glad you still found something of value amidst the problems! :) Sure, it WILL get better; the interaction seems to improve each week, and if I could handle the board more efficiently, it'd make a big difference! Keep listening...we'll get there eventually.

Yeah the heat has affected some other stations too as of late ,mostly AM. Don't apologize for what took place ,just learn from it and move on. It's better to get all the bugs out now then allow them to grow.

Ever since BizRadio took over the station they have nothing but problems with technical glitches and more. What is with that group?

It's MRBI not Bizradio "Multi Cultural radio Inc." Bizradio leases the air time.

From what I understand it was BizRadio that paid for and did the upgrade of the signal and facililties in preparation of them buying it someday. It is the BizRadio people that are responsible for the technical problems.

NO. Bizradio paid MRBI to upgrade the facilities and they did with new studios. MRBI is still in charge of all technical functions. Bizradio is only in charge of programming. MRBI has a fulltime engineer, and they are constantly working out the bugs.

Whatever....they still have big problems. Both BizRadio and MRBI have major issues to be worked out by someone if the signal is to be good and consistent. At the moment it's not good. If BizRadio ever wants to be viable, these problems must be worked out.

I can't argue with that, but it is a MRBI issue not Bizradio.

Yes they were, and MRBI did not communicate to Mike and crew that the transmitter was going to be worked on in time.

That's correct. We were on about 30 mins Sunday night, but should be back to the normal two hours next Sunday. It's nice to be missed!!! :)

Mike, you guys are getting smoother. Just because I was disappointed the first time I tuned in doesn't mean that I didn't give you another chance. By the way, I don't think YOU sound creepy. I had you confused with your co-host, John Lewis. He brings a certain amount of immaturity to the table that doesn't reflect well on your show. Last Sunday night, I could have lived without John whining like a two year old about having to sign off for XMTR repairs. Did it occur to you guys that most likely you could have continued broadcasting on the internet? Most internet streams originate from the master control console. Anyway, FYI, in the event of future XMTR repairs between 6-8 Sunday evenings.

Since you asked for constructive advice: Your show lacks smooth transitions. When you're going into a music segment, instead of saying "Let's play some music" and then going cold into a song...talk up the intro and always include your shows name and the station frequency and/or calls. Example; coming out of your classic aircheck segment, "That's this week's Classic Aircheck...the golden throat of Charlie Van dyke on KLIF in 1977. (roll music here) Next week, from the Hi Fi Club Vault, you'll hear Lynne Haley making the night come alive in 1987 ON KVIL. Coming up next, John Lewis and the news. Here's Gary Lewis and The Playboys on The Hi Fi Club on 1360."

Kudos on your Hi Fi Club website, as well as your historyofdfwradio site.

Okay...I read about this show here on radio-info and decided to tune in last night. Yikes! The Hi Fi Club's production value is lacking a lot...loose segues, dead air, etc. They seldom give the station's frequency, calls, web address OR THE NAME OF THEIR SHOW! They even back announced a couple of artist names wrong.

Mike Shannon has been heard all over the dial doing traffic, but has he ever been a jock? He sounds kinda creepy. I've never even heard of the other guy. They played a fairly entertaining Dave Ambrose KLIF aircheck near the end of the show. That was pretty cool. I suggest more old airchecks and less of Mike and What's His Name??.

If you want to hear the Hi Fi Club, ya better tune in soon. I don't imagine this one is going to last long...even on the tiny 1360AM.

Uncle Dick Balam

Hey there balam.I am like you and sort of beat up on the guys at first but I think they got something. I also had to rethink my critisism as well and appologized for my hashness! However, you seem to be flip-flopping and not sure what you are listening to. Your original post indicated that you were refering to the show on 7-9 which I based my original critique on. John Lewis was not on that show. John seems to be the one with the jock experience, not saying he's a "great jock" by any means but ballances the team well. Chad admits hes never been a jock or announcer. These guys seem to rally take what others say to heart and if you, me or anyone is going to offer constructive help, let's make sure we know who we are refering to and if we do not, let's listen a little more closly and know who we are refering to. You first called Mike "creepy" now it's John. It seems like these boys are against to wall with equipment problems and conditions that make it hard to do a show. I rally wish you guys the best of luckwith this.

Mike Has admitted before he has no "true dj"expereince. John does, HOWEVER,He needs to tone it down quite a bit. He screams into the mike and if that isn't a button pusher, his "whinning" about technical problems is. John is knowledgable it's his communication style that needs an overhaul. Mike is what you see is what you get, laid back, and there's nothing wrong with that. Mike has his passion and heart into the show, its being fine tuned as it goes along and last week by his own admission was a disaster, having been thrown off pace by the last minute transmission maintaince. It is still one of the most original and informative shows on DFW radio..period. John needs to be informative , not distractive.and it will all come together.

Yo Yo Yo, Dawg (sorry, I couldn't help myself) July 9th was my first Hi Fi Club experience; that is correct, Top40Dawg. At the time, the boys were not doing a good job identifying themselves. So, yes, I was confused. Mike, I'm sorry I said you sounded creepy in my July 10th post. In regards to John Lewis, I'm sure he's a nice guy. He just doesn't sound that way on the radio. Since he's the one in the room with "jock" experience, someone needs to pull him aside and advise him to step up and make himself useful. Yes, I agree there is nothing else like The Hi Fi Club on the air in Dallas, Klifhanger. Trust me, I'm all for doing something out of the box. I think this is a very cool idea. That's why I have continued to tune in every week.

Did anyone hear Sunday night's "produced" introduction? Do they always use that? (this was the first time I heard the show at the 6pm start) Very small time stuff. The opening was an analog tuner SFX going down the dial and landing on famous clips of audio from MLK, Jr. and the likes. The tuner SFX never stops when it lands on a frequency. You hear MLK speak, but the tuner keeps moving down the dial while he and the others are talking. Sloppy to say the very least. God awful. And the Wolfman Jack voice? Don't even get me started. My elderly aunt with a tracheotomy could do a better job. Sad, but true.

Uncle Dick

i guess you chaps are listening to another show and i cnat believ i am defending these guys. I need to get a life! Maybe i have the guys names confused. i thought Mike was the host and John and chad were the second and third bananas. Mike and and the one who does news are both a little on the montone side which there is nothing wrong with I guess and john is a little more animated and offsets what, otherwise would sound like a NPR show. John is the one, i though, that does history and weather. Not try to bash, personalities are what they are and John sorta brightens things. He is loud so maybe he needs to learn the board and turn his mike down, big deal! "WHINNING"? the guy makes a joke out of just about everyting. I did not hear sundays show but i don't call him a whinng person by anymeans. I did heard him go on a minor rant about the heat of the studio but god, wouldn't you? The show lacks and needs polish but it seems like people are LOOKING for someone or something to HATE about the show just so they can post it. again i might be comiting the same error I am suggesting you guys are making. Mike mentioned that john ran the show a few weeks back. there was less talk and more of the great music they play. i liked it and mike mentioned that that was john's doing so i base my critique of that. the timing was good, and it had a snappy beat. it's what i like in radio. not traying to start a flame session. i'm just trying to make sure i am talking about the same guys. I like you webpage Mike. its nice to put faces with voices.

WOW! This is humbling! Certainly I appriciate the feedback. Even bad feedback can be good. Well folks, I wish I could offer something other than 'sorry'!

Let's see....how to explain.....(should I explain?)..........

Well, I've always been told my voice is loud enough to be heard from Ft. Worth to Dallas without a radio! ;)
Gang, I don't man th board and I'm sure I give Mike fits because I am all over the place. My 'hyper' delivery is a by-product of nervousness. No excuse, just an explaination.

Now, I've never in my life been called 'whinny' that IS a first. I've always been accused of being they guy who can find the humor at a funeral on Sunday, Christmas morning.

Well, look folks, in radio the audiance is king and you know, I will take to heart what you have to say and evenmore, because I care about radio and this show I will make an attempt to make a change. The only thing I ask is that you will follow-up with me either on the board or by email.

Look, 20 years out of the biz and only doing once a week is sort of hard.

But I can say this. You cared enough about the show to make your voice and opinions known and, man, I really appreciate and love y'all for it because I know you are out there listening and Mike, Chad and I are not just talking to ourselves! :)

Best to all, I truly mean that!

Nice to hear rfom you john. ;D Tough crowd, huh? I've done my share of raggin but all in all, I think you guys got something with this. You have nothing to be sorry for and owe no one an explination. I rally had you guys pegged wrong. Don't let the nay sayers get to you, including me! ::) I like the kxol site, pretty cool. I was a KLIF fan back in the day. I did not realiz how many jockes worked for both KXOL and KLIF. Big D and FW were two markets back then! I had always thought George Carlin worked for KBOX. Guess i had that wrong. oh, one last thing, I have to agree with Uncle Dick, that intro with all the clips tuning in and out is kindof different. Its a cool concept but its too long. The wolfman is not bad I just can't understand what he is saying. Uncel dick, is your aunt with the tracheostomy available? :D

Thank you 'DAWG'! ;)
I took time to listen to the CD of the show from Sunday and I NOW know what the others were referring to. I was poking fun at Chad for not wanting to do the news and he was playing it up because we had to send him to the other studio because his mic was dead in the main control room! LOL! So I was mocking him saying "Wah, I don't want to read the news, WAH they are shutting off the transmitter...etc, etc"

Yes folks, good lord that was annoying! I stand corrected! ;) Now I understand and will certainly sleep better tonight!

As for the intro? I have to defer to Mike on that one. I can say this; there are a lot of great folks in the business doing these intros for us just for the sake of being nice. There is a great deal of ego in this industry and most do not give up their 'pipes' for free. Mike has put this show together with, truly, a $0.00 budget and 100% devotion and love of radio.

As far as 'the nay-sayer', look I can only be me and I am more than aware of my short comings in radio. I make no claims at all to be good jock by ANY means. In fact I just sit at a mic, no board op at all. That is something I've never done and you'd think that would be easy and trouble free! LOL!
Yes, I jocked two stations and made it to afternoon drive at one of those stations. That was 20 years ago! At one time, yes I was probably good, well, at lease OK! ;) I am trying. I assure you, the last thing I want to do once a week is bad radio! I really do like knowing these things. Now let's see if I can possibly win you over. I'd like to! :)
