Hey there. New to the board, but I've read it. Good insight. Good opinions.
I am one of those lemmings that does morning radio in Greenville. I'm actually pretty proud of our product, and our station. I know it's not for everyone. Nothing is.
To confirm something from a while back--yes--I am the oldest son of Bill Ellis from WSSL. I have kicked around the radio business since he was doing mid-days at WSOC in Charlotte.
I have two awesome little boys, a great wife, and....well....after about a decade fighting the good fight working in sales, I decided radio was where I needed to be. I was fortunate to be hired by a great guy who has since moved on, and I now work for another great guy who understands "it".
Fellas....y'all are a helluva lot smarter than me. My wife will confirm this. But, for not a moment should anyone "pity" a jock. Radio is the easiest gig in the world. As for mornings.....I love it! Up before the screaming toddlers...coffee in one hand, newspaper in the other. It's a great life (for me), and though I'm not making the kind of money that was once the standard for morning drive talent, I understand the biz has changed. Knew it going in.
I would encourage you to check out the Magic Morning Show. Lauren and I are only one book into this deal, and now we will see how things progress. More importantly, we are younger.....we understand our audience.....and we actually like them. But, MOST importantly: we are, um, real. No morning zookeepers. No fake laughs. Just real dialogue, delivered efficiently, book-ended by a pretty solid AC playlist. Being REAL + lot o' music = something I would listen to.
A wise radio man, who is now a millionaire from his broadcasting prowess, gave me some sage advice a while back: "Playing the game of radio is like playing in a golf tournament. Quit worrying about your opponent. Play your game, play the course and you will win."
Give us a listen tomorrow on Magic 98.9
Thx!
