Hey there. New to the board, but I've read it. Good insight. Good opinions.

I am one of those lemmings that does morning radio in Greenville. I'm actually pretty proud of our product, and our station. I know it's not for everyone. Nothing is.

To confirm something from a while back--yes--I am the oldest son of Bill Ellis from WSSL. I have kicked around the radio business since he was doing mid-days at WSOC in Charlotte.

I have two awesome little boys, a great wife, and....well....after about a decade fighting the good fight working in sales, I decided radio was where I needed to be. I was fortunate to be hired by a great guy who has since moved on, and I now work for another great guy who understands "it".

Fellas....y'all are a helluva lot smarter than me. My wife will confirm this. But, for not a moment should anyone "pity" a jock. Radio is the easiest gig in the world. As for mornings.....I love it! Up before the screaming toddlers...coffee in one hand, newspaper in the other. It's a great life (for me), and though I'm not making the kind of money that was once the standard for morning drive talent, I understand the biz has changed. Knew it going in.

I would encourage you to check out the Magic Morning Show. Lauren and I are only one book into this deal, and now we will see how things progress. More importantly, we are younger.....we understand our audience.....and we actually like them. But, MOST importantly: we are, um, real. No morning zookeepers. No fake laughs. Just real dialogue, delivered efficiently, book-ended by a pretty solid AC playlist. Being REAL + lot o' music = something I would listen to.

A wise radio man, who is now a millionaire from his broadcasting prowess, gave me some sage advice a while back: "Playing the game of radio is like playing in a golf tournament. Quit worrying about your opponent. Play your game, play the course and you will win."

Give us a listen tomorrow on Magic 98.9 :)

Thx!

John Ellis

Oh, and by the way....saw some names mentioned earlier (Joe Trusty, John Crenshaw, Ric Larson)....these are only a FEW of the GREAT radio pros that I grew up around as a kid. I wish those guys nothing but the best....

It does my heart good to see an oppertunty such as the one that both you, and Lauren have before you. Both Lauren's mother, Heidi, and your Dad, Bill...have my Top Shelf Respect. As you understand, this will not be easy, but well worth the "Swing". Over the years, I have stated that there is only one person that delivers a live spot better than me,...one man,
...the best at it...Bill Ellis! My only concern is that they give you the right playlist, to get ahead. Burnt, overplayed songs spell punch-out, and that will not be your falt, but it erodes your efforts, none the less. You two are second generation Broadcasters, with a clean...let's see what you can do...slate. I wish you both the best,...so, run your headphones loud, coffee very hot, keep a BC powder in your shirt pocket,...and tell your Dad that...
Scooter said hey!

Welcome to the board, John. I can tell that you and Lauren both enjoy what you are doing, and do a great job at keeping the show entertaining and fresh. Overall, I think Magic has some of the best talent in the market. 98.9 has been through a lot of different morning shows since Rick & Kimberly, but I think you two are the best combo since them and the station's on to something. I'd suggest extending it to the 8am hour, but that's just my opinion. ;)
I've always had the highest respect for Ellis & Bradley on WSSL, even though I don't like country, really - one of the best shows in the market.

Best of luck, and I'll keep checking y'all out. :)

Great to see you here John! Sounds like you got your head on right to be a huge success in radio. Loved working with your dad and with Lauren's mom....both cast an illustrious shadow to step out from but you guys are doing a great job! Best wishes,
