Hi! I have a question about Greater Media...and Detroit. But there's no Detroit board...hmm.

Hi! I have a question about Greater Media...and Detroit. But there's no Detroit board...hmm.

Hey. :) I'm from Philadelphia and one of the frequent topics on our board is Greater Media's tendency to overlap songs between their three Philadelphia stations: heritage rocker WMMR, classic rocker WMGK, and variety hits WBEN. Most of the overlap issues are between WMMR and WMGK. I see that in Detroit GM also has three stations: WMGC for adult contemporary, WRIF for rock, and WCSX for classic rock. So, how's the programming on those GM properties? Do a lot of the same songs surface on all three stations? I'm just trying to see if what they're doing in Philadelphia is strategy or a lack thereof. Part of me thinks its clumsy programming and part of me thinks that they're trying to end up with three presets in a row on the average listener's radio.

What do you guys think? I'm really sorry to post a Detroit question on a Chicago board...but, there is no Detroit board. Not even a Michigan one. Maybe I'll pop over to the Wisconsin board and ask them. If you have a suggestion as to where I should post this, let me know. Hope I'm not buggin' you guys. :)

Obviously, this has now been moved to the Coast to Coast board, where I believe the subject is broad enough to be discussed as it applies to all markets where there are clusters.

As an example, in Los Angeles, Clear Channel owns five FMs, and they are all close enough in formats that there is some natural overlap betweenn libraries:

KHHT ("Hot"): R&B oldies
KYSR ("Star"): Hot/Modern AC
KIIS ("Kiss"): CHR
KOST ("Coast"): Soft AC
KBIG: Rhythmic AC

It is entirely possible that listeners may have two or three of those five as presets, which is good for CC because they sell the stations in combo. I would suspect the stations you referenced in Philadelphia are similarly sold together.<P ID="signature">______________
