David,

I'm noticing a lot of repeats of bands (and I don't mean the inst. at the end of your show) from week to week, and even within your show. I am wondering what criteria you use to choose your music?

(For those who are going to say "Gut instinct- these bands are underground hits", or "It's great music, give it a chance, because radio didn't", yeah, I get that. Just tryng to get a feel with Mr. Sadoff is doing. I can hear him in and out in Norteast Houston, and like it.) I like the early alt and punk and wave - just curious.

By the way- liked that you dropped in That Dog- I remember my favorite from them was Old Timer. God Bless College Radio - sometimes!

Davery,

I appreciate your question and I'm glad that you already got the obvious answer out of the way so that I can delve a little deeper into the question. Your question has two parts: 1) Repetition of artists week to week and within the show. 2)Criteria for choosing music.

1)The artists that I repeat from week to week and even sometimes within the same show are the artists that I consider to be Core Artists for the show. They are the glue that holds everything together and for listeners who are less familiar with the music I play, they create a sense of familiarity. There are less than a dozen of these artists and some of them are The Flaming Lips, Elvis Costello, The Clash, The Pixies, The Replacements, Sonic Youth, Echo & The Bunnymen and David Bowie. There is also a Second Tier of artists that appear almost every week such as Robyn Hitchcock, Lou Reed/Velvet Underground, Iggy Pop, Morphine, Radiohead, etc. Then there is also a Third Tier that show up a little less often and, finally, a group of artists that most people have never even heard of such are The Weather Prophets, The Charm Pops, Telstar Ponies, etc. Within each show, I abide by the rule of not playing the same artist any closer than one-hour from the last time I played them. That rule is more relaxed when it comes to separation between artists and former bands ie: Frank Black/Pixies
and Joe Strummer/The Clash.

2)High Fidelity is a broader show than my previous shows (Exposure and Lunar Rotation). The canvas is the mid-60's to the present and the criteria is that it all fits together and makes sense to me. What I mean by that is that there is a lineage involved. A musical thread that ties it all together. The show's roots are in The Velvet Underground, Iggy Pop, T.Rex, David Bowie, The Beatles, The Stones, The Kinks and The Who. From there, we get The Clash, The Ramones, Blondie, Television, Talking Heads, The Jam and Elvis Costello. Next comes Sonic Youth, Echo & The Bunnymen, The Pixies and Robyn Hitchcock. I think you can see where I am going with this and that in the present day it brings us to
Postal Service, Super Furry Animals, Rilo Kiley, Spoon and Pink Grease.

Now that I have been on for about three months, there are some songs that will begin to show up again and hundreds more that I have not gotten to yet. Other bands such as That Dog will continue to pop in from time to time. I have only played a small fraction of the music I plan to play over time.

Hope that covers what you were asking,

David Sadof

good response David. I noticed that you have dug deeper in the alternative rock and roll history. I've told my friends and they have been impressed also.

It's been great to hear all these bands back on the radio. now if we could just get a station to play this 24/7. I have to rely on XM for these bands during the week. :)

also, there are a few bands on that I hear on the XM class alternative channel that I forget about...Prefab Sprout, Chameleons, New York Dolls.<P ID="signature">______________
