High School Football Power

With the local school sports season underway this weekend, it's time to keep an ear out for those AM stations who annually take advantage of the mythical "high school football power" regulations.....staying on day facilities, increased power on night facilities, remaining on after sunset....it's all good when it's 16-14 with 10 seconds left and the home team is bringing in the FG kicker for the come from behind win :-0!

And surprise, check out stadium areas on FM in case anyone is using a Ramsey transmitter or such to provide an in-house feed.

I had a guy do this during ball games & then he had the nerve to ask me why the coverage sucked with the full 1KW at night? That was as close as I've come to hanging up on a client.

Well, it ain't High School Football, but check out the Twins-Mariners game on 710.
And I'm not talking about the Mariner's side of the broadcast on KIRO.

I never knew such a rule existed, or doesnt it. And it just happens that the other night when I decided to check 690 & 940 both of which used to bring the 50kw Montreal stations in here in Upstate NY day and night. I heard football on 690, definitely not NFL sounded more like high school. Usually this frequency is empty under the IBOC hash from WLW ever since 690 Montreal signed off. I have a clip too, but cant seem to identify anything.

We had a guy who subcontracted time from us at an AM I worked for (1kW with 34 watts night). Begged us to stay full power during games--even said he'd pay the fine if we got one. We said no dice.

The way I understand the situation the FCC allows stations to operate at daytime parameters at night if they are airing a football game since they are serving the community and helping people. It falls into the same category that stations no longer have to maintain a public file due to deregulation.

If you believe any of that I have a nice bridge to sell you in one of the New York boroughs and will through in some oceanfront property in our 48th state.

Uhh...no, Rob. There is no exception for sports and stations still have to have a public file.

That was sarcasm. Hence the Brooklyn Bridge/oceanfront property in Arizona reference.

Flag on the play for me mispelling of "throw". I let spell check get the best of me.

Checked back on 690 tonight and heard the top hour ID of WELD-AM along with some classic rock. It was coming in pretty good (1/3 bars on the Sony XDR-F1HD) considering they are only supposed to be running 14 watts out of Fisher, WV and Im in upstate NY (way upstate, near Canada). Also theres IBOC noise from WLW. I wonder if WELD plays football games and I was also hearing them the other night.
