HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS RIGHTS

They refer to themselves, even in local broadcasts as The Signal Radio Network, so you should be able to pick up those broadcasts locally for a "nominal fee".

How about the playoffs? Does Signal own those, as well? Everything I've seen says Signal has the finals, but do we still have to go through CSN for playoffs?

I was under the impression that CSN is not even in the picture anymore.

From what I understand the AAA is going to handle the hometown rights in-house. From what my boss told me, the Rural Arkansas Radio Network was basically something Jay Bunyard, Grant Merrill, and a couple of the other owners and GMs put together to bid on the rights with the express purpose of getting CSN out of the picture. I guess they couldn't keep up with Phillip Johnson's checkbook and whatever Mike Harrison "promised" them to keep his bid in the picture. It's a shame either way, because as much as I dislike some of the ABA people, it would have been nice to keep that in the hands of a collective group of broadcasters who actually do high school sports.

The AAA has said they will now handle hometown rights issues and permission for broadcasts in-house. My guess is that as far as finding broadcasters to cover games, we will have to fend for ourselves. Which is fine with me... I'd rather spend the money to send my own broadcast crew than be forced to take a phone feed from someone who for all I know has never graced a play-by-play microphone.

When postseason comes around, I will help anyone who needs it find play-by-play crews. Just call me... (870) 210-1069. That includes nearby competitors... we are all in this thing together after the regular season ends!

No kidding...Harrison comes up with some doozies. Like the time we contracted wtih him for a baseball playoff in the middle of nowhere - and he got a local high school kid to do them. Horrible!

A good solution to this problem would be to get rid of kiddie high school sports broadcasts all together and play REAL stuff that belongs an AM radio like......talk shows.......

If only talk shows billed nearly as much as high school sports! My stations will broadcast five high schools live this football season and we have Cardinal baseball on the sixth station. I don't get near as much revenue from the talk shows I air - Rush, Hannity, Boortz, O'Reilly - as I do from high school sports.

High school sports is an OUTSTANDING revenue producer. We always did well on football and basketball and at the time (late 90's) baseball was showing some promise for us.

Honestly, we use to have advertisers lined up out the door to do high school stuff. :)

Ahhhhhh.....thanks for the info...

That makes perfect sense....

BTW...do any of you guys know of a station in Arkansas that will be broadcasting the Hog football games over the net???????

None of them if they want to keep their ARSN contract. They are adamant about the fact that no affiliate will stream any of their programming.

They require you to subscribe to the RazorZone for online broadcasts. I go to most all of the games so I have never listened online. I am not sure what they do during local breaks... Do they sell online only ads themselves?

Well, As a U of A Graduate that now lives in Orlando, I guess that I will have to subscribe to Razorzone. I was hoping that I could find a station online because I really want to hear how good ol' Chuck will do as play by play announcer. I used to run the board at KFAY for about three years and sports rap was my main gig. It used to always crack me up when "George....from Harrison"......or "Sebastion....from Cabot"....would call. Also...who could forget that loud guy Hammerin' Hank....or the legendary Fuzzy.....Also, I always loved it when Chuck and Dudley would broadcast from George's on Dickson Street and make comments like.."Why do people always light a couch on fire after a big win"...HAHAHA. Those were good times, and as a guy that is now a broadcasting student, I am glad that I got to sit there and watch Chuck Barrett open up a mic for three years....
