high school sports

I'm new to radio, first station, first full time gig. I'm on at night. My GM tells me today, we're going to air high school sports this fall. I'm devistated. Should I start looking for a new job?

Only if you really feel youre ready to move on. HS sports is something most of us have had to live with in our careers. I dont think its something to quit your first gig over. Might make the next guy think twice about hiring you. You dont want to get labeled as being *difficult* this early in your career. Better yet, embrace this opportunity to learn another aspect of the gig and make yourself MORE valuable to your next employer.

So just because your show gets pre-empted or shortened once or twice a week you're going to quit? Thats a kinda silly/childish reason..........

Agreed. The last thing you want to do is give your current employer a reason to get rid of you. Make yourself as useful as possible and even say you're more than willing to come in extra to run games. The last thing you should do especailly early in your first gig is start complaining. Or as has been said you'll be labled as someone who is "dificult". Think how this would look on your next application. "reason for leaving". "Didn't want to do highschool sports". A future employer would see that and would more than likely not hire you. He or she would probably view you as being a little imature. HS sports are a fact of life in small market radio and it is nothing to be devistated over. Seems to me like an over reaction.

Hell, if my show was pre-empted by high school sports, I'd be happy. Not because I got to leave early (Id be the one running the board) but because to me doing high school sports is truly a sign of being a part of and involved with the community... get used to that or don't work in small market radio.

I thought billythe kid asked for advice not for smart a_s comments from you paul. If you don't want to give him sound advice that type nothing instead of calling him childish. I think your ego may be a bit to large for someone I have never heard of.

I was HARDLY giving him or trying to give him smart ass comments. I was telling him the reality.

Our 3 stations are regularly choked full of sports, often interuppting one whole airshift or parts of 2. Do our personalities complain? Nope. We know it's a way of life and being the HERITAGE stations in the area.
