Highest number of Christmas stations in a market

Well as of today

Milwaukee:

WRIT-95.7 Clear Channel (Normally 60s-70s)
WMYX-99.1 Entercom (Normally Hot AC)
WFZH-105.3 Salem (Normally CCM)

have gone Christmas.

By the end of the month WOKY-920 Clear Channel (Normally Standards) will join them. That gives Milwaukee alone 4 Christmas stations.

Tomorrow WLIT Chicago Clear Channel (Normally AC) will go Christmas giving Chicago 1.

Living here, that gives me 5.

Any other markets/areas have this many?<P ID="signature">______________

You can add KOSI/Denver to the list. KOSI started All Christmas today (11/17). Usually KOSI starts before the 17th. I guess it's been so warm here in Denver they waited until it actually started snowing in Denver today to start. So far for Denver Front Range, including Colorado Springs and Ft. Collins...KOSI is the first one but I'm sure there will be others.

This week's Billboard Radio Monitor is pretty much all about Christmas programming, and I read a few things that blew my mind.

First, the station in a given market which 'wins' the Christmas position can sometimes see ratings increases in December of as much as 50%. Even when more than one station goes All Christmas, each station can garner as much as a 20% ratings gain. I suppose this can be decent incentive to have several in one market.

Second, I also read that because of preprogrammed music, every Clear Channel station has the capability of going all-Christmas within 3 minutes. That explains how at least a couple I know of have been on with Christmas music within minutes of being beat to it by the folks across the street. I just thought this was pretty cool.

Ya know, I've complained about stations going all-Christmas for years. Looks like I need to stop being such a scrooge. Next year, I know my AC station will be winning the Christmas race for sure.

Anybody have any advice as to how soon is too soon?

5, wow, and it's not even Thanksgiving yet. I think last year the most stations I heard in a single proper market was 6... I believe it was out west somewhere (west meaning Rocky Mountains and westward), I don't remember where though.

Based on the most recent (November 23rd) update of 100000 Watts.com's listings of all-Christmas stations, Milwaukee and Omaha are the markets with the most all-Christmas stations (four each).

On other boards, it's been speculated that Columbus, Ohio and Rochester New York (both of which have three all-Christmas stations apiece at this writing, the evening of November 23rd) may each get a fourth all-Christmas station by the end of the week.

And here in the Boston area, we (at this writing) have a choice of up to four all-Christmas stations in some parts of the market. Only one of the four (WODS-103.3) is actually in Boston. Two are from Providence (WSNE-93.3 and WWLI-105.1; both of which can be heard in much of the Boston area, especially south of the city), and the other is from Worcester (WSRS-96.1, which can be heard in much of the Boston area).

It should be noted that in at least a couple of markets, the total includes "rimshot" signals that may not cover the entire market.

Here in the Quad Cities radio market (including the metro are and outer parts of the market), I know of two radio stations converting to Christmas music for the holidays. Clear Channel's KUUL 101.3 (which DJ Joey D refered to as 'The Christmas Superstation', but still plays 'Super '60s and '70s') and Virden's 93.9 WYEC from Geneseo change from 'Super '60s and '70s' and 'Your Easy Choice' (respectively) to Christmas music. One time, I also remember WKBF playing all-Christmas music, but now that it's the new home of Air America in the QCA, I don't forsee that happening again on that station (except maybe on the locally-produced show 'Croonerville')
