Highroads With Dan Davis

I was setting my DVR to record NBCs Football Night in America. I turned to KPNX. It was 4:07 P.M. and I saw Dan Davis, formerly of KTVK's Good Morning Arizona. I checked the onscreen guide and it's AAA Presents Highroads with Dan Davis. It's a program similar to Arizona Highways.

Dan looked good and this is a great job for him. I thought Dan was kind of spinning his wheels at GMAZ and didn't have a clear mission.

I hope this show lasts for a while.
 
I caught Highroads yesterday and thought Dan did a great job. It fits perfectly with his personality.

Then, I turned to 15 and caught Arizona Highways. Thought the programs were almost identical from a programming perspective. I wonder if 15 will use Robin occasionally on the news, like 12 did back in 2004 and 2005.
 
I can't stand either show. I don't like Robin Sewell or her delivery.

I looked at the first of the Dan Davis programs and was turned off by the if it weren't for us you wouldn't know anything attitude.

I still shudder when I remember when Sewell was doing an interview in some out of the way general store, or whatever, somebody entered the establishment through a screen door and you could see her look over at the doorway. I thought that was very unprofessional and wondered why they didn't reshoot that scene.

What really turns me off is shooting video that looks like film. If I wanna see film I'll go to a movie theatre.

That's my comment.

I just have a standard for programs I want to watch. The quality may be okay for some, but I demand a better quality. These people...

Well, I was going to compare the local stuff to other shows I've watched, but I won't. Suffice it to say, there's hardly anything worth watching on TV anymore. The TV equipment nowadays should make for more interesting TV. Unfortunately, the people in charge have no idea of how to make interesting TV.

I'm sorry I gave you the impression that I got up on the wrong side of the bed. Please tell me why you think these programs are worth watching.

I admit that I do like these types of shows primarily for their informational content. I'm newer to Arizona so I don't know all about the small towns and interesting (or not) places to visit.

That being said, perhaps my previous reply was a bit abrupt. However, Robin and Dan seems to be reasonably well-known and generally liked broadcasters in the Phoenix area. You obviously know quite a bit (much more than me) about television production capabilities, but don't seems to like these two shows or their hosts.

Perhaps you could enlighten us on how to improve this type of show. I would certainly rather watch either of the two shows over another informercial for the NuWave oven! :D

Ok, that really crosses the line!!! Have you even tried the NuWave oven??? Don't knock conduction cooking until you've tried it. Next to my Ronco knife set, Veg-O-Matic, Chop-O-Matic, Pocket Fisherman, Solid Flavor Injector, GLH-9 Hair in a Can Spray and Ronco Popeil Automatic Pasta Maker, it's the best thing since sliced bread!!
 
How to improve these two shows? Don't get me started.

Actually, there probably are people who like these shows and the people who host them.

I am tired of the style of production American programmers think they have to use to make their program interesting. Perhaps the a good portion of the viewers in this country like the way things are going with their TV shows.

Do they like the pseudo-drama that the producers try to create? Or, do they just want the facts of a given situation or topic?

Do they like the "I'll bet you didn't know this" style of delivery rather than a straight forward approach to talking. Maybe people like to have "check this out" or "get this" added to their information to accent important points. I do not.

Better production values exist and are very informative, but I am not going to be the one who tries to convery this to the production people. After all, they've been "in the business" I have not. Believe me, I wanted to be in the business, but I cannot. (And, if I told you the reasons [all very valid and researched] you'd think I was kidding and/or crazy.)

Thanks for writing. Again, I apologize if I insulted anyone, but I have to let it be known not everybody likes the way programming is presented in this day and age.

Unfortunately, looking at the continued popularity of reality shows in general, I would have to say that the pseudo-drama approach is what the masses want.
 
We, Americans, certainly seem to like our drama...what we do without the inherent drama in our politics???

I do agree with Mike that the shows are a bit melodramatic. I contrast them with, say, Northwest Backroads up in Seattle. Northwest Backroads is a more fact based and doesn't look quite as "filmish" as the two shows here. However, I always figure that Arizona shows seem to be oriented toward the 65+ crowd, rather than the younger folk.
