I'm rather new to the whole on air aspect of things. Ive been working for a broadcasting company for about a year and a half, and have been on air for about 8 months... I'm finding it harder and harder to come up with new stuff. I'm not sure how to relate to my listners... its starting to feel a bit stuffy. what are a few things i can do to make my on air broadcasts more interesting?
thanx

I do not know how good this will work for you but it works for me. I would just take my days off and just dont listen to the radio and just relax and clear my mind. Usall in those days I would go out of town, watch football or spend time with a love one. Anything to keep my mind off of radio

I dont know how this will work for you but its a try.

You don't say what format you're in, or what time slot. The best way to relate to listeners is to live the same lifestyle they do. Go where they go, do what they do. Keep in mind that most listeners don't give a damn about the dj anyway...they just wanna hear the music.

i agree for the most part... i try to keep it short simple and informative/entertaining... Format? wow, its a cross between a chr/aor/and top 40.... I'm an afternoon drive but am moving to overnights, later this month. what about segway's.... im really trying to get out of the this is that was, but am not sure how to skip all that and pull a good segway...
thanx

Tips?

If you're passionate plus topical and relevant (to your station's audience), you'll do fine.

Please remember: there are hundreds of ways to say EVERYTHING. If you avoid getting stuck in ruts (using the same terminology, same phraseology and same cadence & tempo), you'll be OK. Say the weather differently (even if it's the same forecast every day), say your name with varying tone and inflection. CONNECT with your audience and don't talk AT them- talk to them, using you/we/us instead of they/them/that.

Don't just sound interesting, make sure you're truly INTERESTED in your content. Always ask yourself: do my listeners REALLY care about this? Find great talent you love to listen to and take things they do and adapt them to your strengths while being yourself.

Trite as it sounds, success in radio is not a sprint, it's a marathon. Try today to be a little better than yesterday, then think of ways you can be better tomorrow than you were today. Good luck.

Re: Tips?

Well said.

Show prep never stops. If you're at the mall and observe something, make a mental note of it. If you're watching TV and you see something, write it down. Show prep never ends.

Keep in mind what you want to hear as a listener, and speak in a conversational manner. When you're reading a liner about a party the station is at tonight, act as though you're telling it to your friend who is going with you to the party tonight.

Less is more. Meaning the fewer words you use the better!

Re: Tips?

Yeah, what they said...oh, and segway is spelled "segue".

seg/segue/sag/sig

Isn't a "Segway" that fairly new GPS-controlle stand-up scooter thing? <LOL>

LMAO! I think we missed the point.... I'm Kidding, thanx to everyone for the help, honestly it has been a gigantic step in making my life a little more comfortable on air... ive started to relax on my day off, and not focus and try so hard, ive been reading show prep, watching more important things on tv... except for those mythbusters they rock... and really taking everyone's advice to mind.... oh advice and spelling tips... thanx and if you think of anything else let me know.... im always open to suggestions and willing to listen!

Thanx,
Radio-Adict

P.S. Oldies Cat thanx for the music scheduling advice you sent me last week

1.) Do you not have a PD who regularly airchecks you? Doesn't sound like it..

2.) Research, research and research some more.. find tidbits about the music your playing, the artists, etc.. use those in your segues..

"Todays hits, X101.. can you believe Madonna likes to eat raw eggs before she hits the stage?? oooo.. here's her latest.. "I'll sleep with anyone.." on X101..

Obviously I made all of that up, but you get the idea.. I wouldn't use those EVERYTIME you into a song, but I'd recomment dropping in at least one an hour..

3.) With your format, you're probably talking to females.. with that mix, I'd guess females in the lower 30's.. (although I'm not sure how the AOR plays in.. define AOR.. do you mean Greenday, Bowling for Soup, etc.. or Metallica, AC/DC?)

Find out what your target demo is and then find out what things they're interested in..

For females in their lower 30's...

Their kids..
TV: Desperate Housewives.. Reality shows..

Entertainment news.. (watch Talk Soup in E!)

Good luck!
Scott

Two weeks later, tape it again.
-Count how many times you said...

"..after the break we have..."
" Coming up..."
" x101.3 fm, coming up ...comimg up"
