Hip Hop and Rap Over??

The following comes from today's Roger Friedman column on foxnews.com:

Is Hip-Hop Over? Country Rules Top 20
I heard a weird rumor a few weeks ago: Clear Channel was telling its stations that by the end of this year, hip-hop and rap would be "over." They were making significant changes at their radio stations that would emphasize pop music and songs again.

Does that mean B96 will have hip hop all to itself??

Research points that Hip Hop is on a downtrend and has saturated. It does not mean it will cease being a musical style.

At the worst case scenario, airing bad, unpopular or unfamiliar Hip Hop would not help B96, the Urbans or any other station in any market.

I doubt Clear Channel announced such a thing, or more pointed, released a memo on it. If you have such, pass it along, it is interesting.<P ID="signature">______________

Agreed, the stations are not going to get rid of Hip Hop, you will still hear top 40 hiphop, but hopefully the really terrible artists will be weened out. I work for a company that is the largest HipHop promoter in the Midwest. Right now we are starting up a video podcast site, and we have been interviewing a lot hip hop artists. 90% of all these artists say they do not even listen to hiphop.

If the artists don't listen to there own genre..then there is definitly a problem.

There seems to be a sense that hiphop has peaked in popularity. I agree that it's not going away, though. It'll be interesting to see what new musical trends it gives way to, and of course everyone is going to have a different opinion on what happens. Depending on what their demos are, I could see B96 mixing in more pop, or maybe even dance if it ever grew into popularity again. I'd guess that GCI and Power would go for a mix of hiphop and R&B, GCI moreso for the fact that it built it's foundation on R&B to begin with. Country is a major format player in many parts of the country, but I can't say that I see hiphop fans trading in their T-Mac's or Carmelo's in for cowboy boots. CHR maybe, but I could see a lot of listeners growing into the Urban or Urban AC audience. Unlike rock or country, you don't have a lot of hiphop artists who keep recording into their 40's (not many into their 30's, at that) and so as newer, younger artists continue to take their turn in the spotlight, I think older listeners become gradually detached, since many of the artists they grow up with have quit recording and haven't "evolved" with the genre anymore. Of course, there are a few exceptions with guys like Snoop and LL Cool J, but these are two guys who've maintained a healthy presence because they've kept recording through the years, and they've always been big hiphop stars. Musically, hiphop has always been a very dynamic format, and trends come and go rapidly. That's both a good thing and bad thing. Those trends draw new fans, and being the double-edged sword that it is, some fans also depart with those trends.

If its just a weird rumor then its just a weird rumor and
not worthy of further speculation..

Okay lets also look at how many Rock artist who don't listen to there own music or how about Country. I mean what's your point.

Well, you knew the ride wasn't going to last forever. I am actually surprised it has lasted this long. Don't get me wrong, I like some hip-hop and rap music, but I think it has saturated the industry to the point where it has taken away from other genres of music. I can't do hip-hop and rap 24-7. What about more slow jams, urban and underground dance songs, etc?
Of course, rap will not completely go away, but I think it has run its course in the mainstream. THANK GOD!!!!!!!!!!!

The point is that all the artists think that rap music right now is terrible.

As a person who likes hip-hop, I thought most of the mainstream stuff from the last few years wasn't anything great. Hip hop in the 80s and early 90s in my opinion was the best era for the genre with artists like Tupac, Bone Thugs & Harmony, Snoop, LL Cool J, Public Enemy, DAS EFX, etc. The newer stuff just sounded too commercialized.

Best thing they could do.....Todays Hip hop is crap! ('80s hip hop is good though (Ton loc,etc....))

Hip Hop Over??

This whole Hip-Hop Lifestyle" thing has been a big cultural cram-down all along, just another category for the record companies to create to make more money. Not really much different than the whole Gen-X thing, which lasted what? About 15 minutes.Think about it- suburban white kids doing the whole gangsta-wannabe thing? Fans and creators of hip-hop say it reflects their life in the streets and I don't disagree with that, but for those rich white kids in the burbs, what is the connection (other than to reflect what they're TOLD and brainwashed is cool, the latest 'trend')? Some will pull the racist card here, but I hear people say what I just said all the time- they just say it quitely so as not to offend anyone but I don't believe this view is in the minority at all. It never made sense to begin with, any more than lilly-white bread country music being huge in largely ethnic areas (which it is not).

I totally agree. Hip Hop and rap in the mainstream has ran its course. I think stations like WGCI were smart in maintaining a R&B heavy playlist. It is time once again for Urbans to have a balance of R&B and hip hop not just all hip hop all the time.

Hip-hop and rap is NOT music!!!!There is no musical talent in this garbage!!!Rap is short for Crap!

I don't think it is going totally away either, BUT I think the popularity of it is starting to wane. There are other types of music starting to get back into the forefront. I am starting to notice more Urban/Pop slow jams starting to creep up in popularity once again.I even feel dance music will comeback with the popularity of the Cascada song, "Everytime we Touch."

You and me BOTH!!! :(I'd MUCH RATHER listen to Dance / Techno / Electronic music than to that Hip-Hop junk!!MTV has 2 ENTIRE DIGITAL CHANNELS of Hip-Hop on digital cable!!Those are VH1 Soul and MTV Jams.I think that that's ONE Hip-Hop channel TOO MANY!!What about the Rock fans?MTV Jams pretty much took over the channel that was occupied by MTV X, and that was a GOOD Rock video channel!!Same story goes for VH1 Mega Hits!! That channel was a GOOD Rock video channel!! But in this case, MTV Networks chose to gut this channel in favor of "LOGO" (which is a general entertainment channel for the GLBT (Gay/Lesbian/Bi-Sexual/Trans-Gendered) community).Yes. Maybe they TOO deserve their own digital channel. But I DON'T think that us Rock video fans should be thrown to the wolves because of that, though!! :(And to this date, there has not be ONE attempt at a Dance video channel yet!!Canada has BPM:TV. Australia has Club [V] (which is a spin-off of Channel [V] there).I think that the U.S.A. should get its own Dance music video channel on digital cable!!What do you all think of that idea?DeanSB

Well, I rather listen to hip hop than horrid country

I think a lot of you are making comments on a genre of music you don't like or understand. Hip Hop is not going anyhwhere and I don't see why any of you are entertaing the thought of it. Many top 40 stations in the United States have been adding more and more hip hop and urban artists to there playlists becuase that is what's popular with most people. The #1 song on pop radio this week was Sean Paul's HIP HOP song Temperature. Anyway you look at it Hip Hop has become the mainstream and some of you just can't stand it.

No. I can't stand it.I liked Hip-Hop better back in the late-1980's/1990's.But I think that, in this decade, Hip-Hop has been overplayed just WAAAAAAY TOO MUCH!! :-(I'd much rather listen to Dance / Techno music than to this Rap junk!! :-(And when MTV/VH1 have 2 WHOLE CHANNELS of Hip-Hop, but yet NO Rock or Dance channels to speak of, I think that the writing's on the wall...there's just TOO MUCH Hip-Hop now!! :-(Just because some executive in New York, Hollywood, or Los Angeles SAYS that "Hip-Hop is popular now.", DOSEN'T make that so!! :-(What do they base those statements on, anyway??A survey of about, what?...2000 people?? 3000 people??That dosen't come close to what may well be popular!! :-(DeanSB
