Hip Hop And The Crossover Records

I was listening to a Hip Hop podcast online when the DJ put on the Justin Bieber and Usher song Somebody To Love.

I was thinking to myself... "wow, just wow."

Justin Bieber reminds me a lot of Justin Timberlake and it got me thinking.

Artist who have a strong pop following like Timberlake and Bieber occasionally have that certain crossover record. Prime example of Timberlake would be My Love featuring T.I. and Biebers example would be the Somebody To Love with Usher.

Even B.E.T. has embraced Bieber and even nominated him several times for awards.

My question is... Top 40 stations can easily get away with playing these records and they do.

What about Hip Hop stations? How would KBBT's core audience see it if they threw this song into rotation?

When Power 106.7 was around they were playing MY LOVE and I remember a few Hip Hop head listeners making fun of power for playing a pop star. In their eyes, they saw it as a non Hip Hop move for a Hip Hop station.

Honestly I do not care for Bieber but listening to the song with Usher it sounds as if it is a normal R&B song. What do you guys think about this topic?

Unfortunately, that's how urban and rhythmic is changing. Personally, I'm not too thrilled about it,because I will always have love for hip hop. Just listen to Power 106 in L.A. Even K104 here in Dallas is trying to dabble with it a little. I heard a little of the song "I Wanna Be a Billionaire" in a mix on K104 the other morning. I also heard the dance part of "Imma be" in the mix as well, so urban/hip hop/rhythmic radio is evolving right before our ears. Not saying that hip hop is dead, but it is having health problems.

WHTA used to play "I'm a slave for you" by Britney, and I think WVEE still has "gone" by Nsync in certain parts of their rotation. There was a slow Justin Timberlake song on WHTA around 2007 while they were also playing "take u there" by Sean Kingston. I believe WVEE is still playing Justin Bieber's "baby". Hot 97 in New York used to play "disturbia" by Rihanna and has recently played "Shots" by LMFAO and mixed it with "I gotta feeling" by Black Eyed Peas.

Has anyone checked out the KIIS 1984 recordings and compared them to what top 40 sounded like in the late 90's early 00's? Well, now that the hip hop generation are now the parents, we are once again in a transition to the next big sound, and just wait until 2020 and see how different we sound once again from the year 2000.

What I'd like to know is how many urbans played reggaeton during the reggaeton phase? I wish I had a computer during that time to research it.
