Hip Hop goes backwards in Chicago

As of June 2nd Power 92 will be R&B and swapping formats with sister Soul 106.3

106.3 will be Power 106 Hits & Hip Hop while i dont like the imaging or the positioner, overall I've been saying for months that 92.3 will go R&B.

It will be good for billing i guess on the Adult 25-54 but Hip Hop takes a big hit in the market.

For Rockford it means a new Hip Hop station for the broke ass market since Power 1059 aka Hot 1059 was killed off a few years back.

Now, being that the UAC format on 92.3 will have Tom Joyner, Warren ballentine, and Michael Baisden, overall the local jock for the station will be what do ya know The Diz who was 10 years on WGCi 6-10.

And hip hop will be back on 106.3 since the very company that originally bought the station and killed the format in 1997.

full circle...

This will once again boost the ratings for WGCi. Having hip hop on 106, makes me wonder how much budget they will have seeing as it will be less than Power ever had i would assume.... making me wonder if syndicated mornings will be coming back to Market #3. Rickey Smiley Russ Parr are the choices. Ewww.............. not for this city.

WVAZ leads the ratings in Chicago, I am sure that is why this move was made, use the stronger signal to compete with WVAZ. It also makes sense for Rockford, though I am sure the move wasn't made with that in mind.

I hope the new POWER 106 doesn't go rhythmic. POWER 92 is the only real hip-hop choice for Chicago. On my last visit WGCI was way too R&B for me. I don't think Tom Joyner will be on both stations for long. Maybe it's just to get listeners prepared for the swap considering no jocks were dismissed.

Hmmm, i'm hearing Warren Ballentine's show on WSRB / SOUL 106.3 via the net. I'm assuming Al Sharpton show will follow then Michael Baisden in the aftrenoons. Is Crawford trying to compete against V103 with 2 stationd both catering to the 25-54 demo? POWER 92.3 is only playing R&B. Where's the Hip-Hop?

TJ in the morning, but reports are saying they aint changing. there are some stations in the country that are hip hop and have TJMS, but it still don't fit.

transition takes time and its a private company so they can do whatever they want.

Remember 2001, we aint go'in no where, cuz its POWER FOR LIFE!

what they need to do is buy the Emmis stations.................... BAM!

That's R&B-lean of WGCI's playlist is due to them being a longtime urban contemporary for decades although their sister station is an Urban AC. It tends to be slightly dayparted with more hip-hop at night from 6-10pm.
