Hip Hop makes a move in Myrtle Beach

Power 100.3 flipped from rhythmic to mainstream as i100 Monday. Meanwhile, Rickey Smiley and the hip hop, packed up and moved over to Kiss 98.5 as the station goes mainstream urban.

Interesting, considering WDAI was full service, urban contemporary playing both hip-hop and R&B with Tom Joyner in the morning for a number of years then shifted urban AC last summer now back towards the mainstream urban category. I wonder what will the loyal listeners of Tom Joyner will do now?

I have nothing against TJ, but he is more for Urban AC than Mainstream Urban or Rhythmic.

I'm not questioning which format he works with because it's obvious, I'm asking where does his listeners go in that region after having an outlet for a nearly a decade?

They do nothing, or they listen online somewhere, Lots of morning shows come and go.

Didn't 100.3 carry a Pop CHR before they went Hip Hop as Power 100.3? I was thinking they did the format before. Now that WDAI has moved back to a Mainstream Urban direction, will any other station in Myrtle Beach make the move to Urban AC to cater the older crowd?

100.3 was Pop as HOT 100.3. Cumulus flipped it to Rhythmic (really Urban) as POWER 100.3 with Rickey Smiley in the mornings. This lead sister station 98.5 KISS FM (WDAI) to switch from Urban Contemp to strictly Urban AC. POWER took away some of the listeners from KISS causing them to drop down in rating when they were always up top.

Urban AC was tried last year with Quantum as Q107.1 with Harvey and Baisden, but the ratings didn't do much. At that time Myrtle Beach had 2 Urban AC and 1 Hip-Hop choice. From the way things look, I don't think Urban AC can survive in Mrytle Beach :(

I think Myrtle Beach could handle an Urban AC. 98.5 was practically an Urban AC for years with dayparted hip-hop thrown in for good measure. I'm surprised Myrtle Beach has no trace of Urban AC in the market now and no out of market signals to rely on. 99.7 WXST is blocked out by 99.5 WRNN. The closest thing to Urban AC possibly is Movin 94.5 with the rhythmic oldies.

That's what I was thinking as well. WDAI was an adult-leaning urban contemporary for sure. They played hip-hop songs in the rotation from 2PM to 10PM, but it was mainly targeting the 25-40 year olds of the 18-49 demographic range of the station.
