Hip-Hop Sports Radio?

Ok, whats the deal with Xtra Sports 570? Lee Hacksaw Hamilton, in effect, is being replaced by Joe Grande of Power 106 fame and Matt "money" Smith from KROQ. They are playing it off as Lee being on 7 days a week but clearly he's been demoted to weekends. Is there a "HIP-HOP" sports audience out there that would justify demoting one of your heavy hitters? Very sad for sports talk fans.

I don't much about Money, but Joe Grande is horrible...he can't put a sentence together without stammering and stuttering. I'll tune for the curiosty factor, I give them six months maximum for the length of that show. XTRA tried to do a "hip-hop" type of sports show with Ray Crockett and Carlos Del Valle, and it lasted maybe then a year. As for Hacksaw, I remember reading that his contract is up at the end of year, and I would wonder how long this arrangement will last. If Hacksaw is gone after this year, maybe he'll go to either San Diego's Mighty 1090 or ESPN 800.

Yeah, that's true, he could hook up with the Mighty 1090 in San Diego since Hacksaw still lives in the North County. And listeners in the OC will still be able to hear him. Does 1090's signal blast into LA county at all?

1090 covers the coastal area better than inland. XTRA's
move is incredibly stupid, but what's new. Saw is a unique
character with a ton of energy, one of the few guys in sports
radio who brings some urgency and framework to the show. Not
just riffing.

It is a sad day. He is one of the most unique voices in sports radio. Even though his signal no longer reaches from Baja to the Canadian Rockies, this guy did his homework on national sports and had answers to a lot of non-LA sports questions. I started listening to Xtra for Jim Rome and left the stream on one day and caught the Saw and was hooked.

I guess the Mighty 1090 is maybe in his future. He's a San Diego guy anyways and 570 in San Diego is a joke. Yuma? El Centro? Palm Springs? Only on the internet. What has happened to the Superstation? First Mancow and Hendrie - and now this!<P ID="signature">______________

This will go down as one of the worst decisions in LA Radio this year. I kinda saw something like this happening when they refused to reign in the Loose Cannons (quality air time for Vic the Brick? Who knew?) and have been sporting liners from Snoop Dogg. They clearly want this to be the Hip-hoppinst sports station around. And wait till Laker season is back - the station becomes all Lakers all the time in season and it is just unlistenable. (Another) Bad day for sports talk radio in this town.

1090 is pretty much useless in LA County except along the coast. Inland, the RFI levels are so high as to make reception difficult and unpleasant. At one point, as a Spanish station they got real numbers in LA, but nearly 20 years ago. Since then, the noise has maed it so that any signal below about 15 mv/m is just not adequate to give good reception.

Same is true in much of inland OC. Plus, the sidebands of 1110 and 1070 whack them very badly.

Indeed, a sad day in sports radio. I can't believe the
self-proclaimed Franchise of sports radio will be moving
into what is the programming equivalent of a strip mall.
This is terrible news and I see they're betting all their chips
on a successful Lakers season. "Money" as you know, has
replaced Larry Burnett as Lakers post-game show analyst
so it will indeed be all Lakers, all the time.

During the prev Lakers season, XTRA had a Sunday hiphop
morning show with Joe Grande, Vic the Brick. It was generally
a nails-against-the-chalkboard experience every time I tried
to tune in for a sports update. Vic would endlessly
bellow out with his array of mantra babble and no
sooner than another "hee-yah" would it be necessary to change
stations again. I don't see how any could drive home
sanely listening to that drivel.
