Hip-Hopping down?

Listening to "American Top 40" and for some time I'm noticing far less Hip Hop/Rap pieces. What is driving this? Is it a trend amongst listeners and what they want to hear at CHR or is it just a splitting up between those stations that lean Rhythmic/Hip Hop and those that are more "Pop". Has Rap worn out its welcome somewhat?

Straight up rap has been winding down. Thanks to the Dirty South artists. Hip Hop (Which is more than just rap lyrics) is reinventing itself through Trap music.

The funny thing about Trap is that it started out with Hip Hop from the South. But it seems to be taking on a new life lately since EDM DJs' have been incorporating Trap into their sets. The best definition that i can give you at this time is that Trap is heavy on the 808 bassline, high hats and the trend lately has been to mix in synth and other electronic music elements. The Harlem Shake by Baauer is a simple Trap song that showcases what the sound is like but it's still evolving. The original Trap is is more along the lines of Gucci Mane or even Waka Flocka Flame.

I think it has more to do with the newer Hip-Hop and R&B artists returning to their roots......the music they're making isn't reality all that Pop friendly and it caters more to "true" Hip-Hop and R&B fans instead of the causal ones. (Kendrick Lamar, J. Cole, Drake, Frank Ocean, Miguel, etc....)

BTW, Trap music is basically dead at this point. (Gucci Mane, Waka Flocka Flame, Yo Gotti, etc....are all struggling right now) Young Jeezy is really the only one keeping it alive nowadays and he's been around for nearly a decade now (hard to believe it's been that long)

Hip-hop is rapidly becoming less CHR friendly...or maybe CHR is becoming less hip-hop friendly. Either way, we are seeing less and less hip hop on CHR. The CHR/Rhythmic format is also losing stations, with the more pop-leaning ones dropping the hip-hop and R&B altogether and going straight up CHR. The rap era is virtually over except for stragglers like "Thrift Shop." Generally late '90s and '00s born kids aren't into hip-hop (its their parents' music). It's likely it will be completely gone from Top 40 within the next few years.
