So, did you alredy know this was about Trivosonno before you even clicked to read this? LOL

It seems Triv's mouth has gotten him & Clear Channel into some very hot water with the AIDS Taskforce of Cleveland (and unwanted attention for Clear Channel).

Here's the Press Release the AIDS Taskforce has sent to (almost) every single media organization in OHIO!!! -- at least every major print organization in the state got it.

AIDS Taskforce Accuses Radio Station of Violation of Corporate Policies

The AIDS Taskforce of Greater Cleveland today calked on radio station WTAM to adhere to their corporate policies by “being a good citizen of the community.” The Taskforce asserts that recent comments made by WTAM radio host Mike Trivisonno about people with HIV/AIDS violate that policy.

WTAM is owned by Clear Channel, whose Corporate Culture statement, given to all personnel, advises employees, “Don’t do things that would make Clear Channel (or yourself) look bad. In addition, the Clear Channel family believes in being a good citizen of the community.”

The company’s Diversity Statement says that “Our company is enriched and made more effective through representation of diverse experience, backgrounds, ethnicity, education, sexual orientation and regional and cultural orientation.” WTAM’s Trivisonno has also made numerous and repeated comments and jokes that many gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people find offensive.

"We have repeatedly attempted to meet with WTAM radio personality Mike Trivisonno but have received no response,” said Earl Pike, Executive Director of the AIDS Taskforce. “At first, it seemed he was unwilling to eat a meal prepared by a person with HIV or AIDS. Now he seems unwilling to even be in the same room as someone living with the virus.”

Beginning the week of June 20, Trivisonno began asserting on his radio show that he would never eat at a restaurant that had people with HIV on the food service staff. When a radio caller pointed out that discrimination in hiring was illegal, he suggested that people with HIV in the food service industry be required to wear the red ribbon so they could be easily identifiable to restaurant patrons. Since then, he has continued to make similar comments.

The comments unleashed critical e-mails, letters, and phone calls to the radio station, and a column by Plain Dealer columnist Connie Shultz. One letter, from Mentor businessman Michael Klein, compared the suggestions that people with HIV be required to wear the red ribbon to Nazi Germany’s treatment of Jews.

On June 22nd, the AIDS Taskforce hosted a luncheon, which people with HIV helped prepare, attended by over 80 people. Though invited, Trivisonno did not attend or respond.

On June 23rd the Taskforce’s Pike sent, via courier, a personal invitation to Trivisonno and his on-air partner Kim Mihalik. It invited “the two of you to sit down with a handful of people with HIV – I’d say no more than four people – and just talk for an hour. No media about the meeting or its content; outside public view.” The Taskforce has yet to receive a reply.

On June 30th, over 30 community volunteers gathered to bake over 1,000 cookies, which were delivered to over 100 representatives of local media who had helped promote positive attitudes and accurate information about people living with HIV and HIV transmission. While members of the news staff at WTAM e-mailed their appreciation for the cookies, Mike Trivisonno was once again silent.

And last night, nearly 100 people gathered at 8500 Euclid Avenue to prepare food baskets for Trivisonno, Mihalik, and Clear Channel executive Jeff Meltzer. The baskets are being delivered this morning.

Pike and others in the community are clearly frustrated. “Many, many people with HIV/AIDS and their families told me how painful it was to hear Mike Trivisonno’s comments,” he said, “and it seems dismissive and insensitive that he would not want to learn more. It hardly exemplifies the Clear Channel policy of being a good citizen.” Pike also notes that “misinformation about HIV/AIDS – especially when presented by a powerful media outlet such as WTAM – sets the whole community back in terms of education to truly win the fight against HIV/AIDS. WTAM has a responsibility to counter that misinformation.”

“If Mr. Trivisonno thinks he can just move on to something else, without addressing the pain and confusion his comments have created, he may be mistaken,” added Pike. “One of our clients reported that she had called the station to complain, and received a response from an employee who said, ‘we’re so over that issue!’ But people with HIV/AIDS and their families are not over it. They live with the challenge of a life-threatening illness every day, made more difficult by prejudice and unfounded fear. For Trivisonno, it’s about ratings. For the nearly 4,000 people with HIV/AIDS in northeast Ohio – and the tens of thousands more who are affected by the illness of a friend or family member – it’s about their lives.”

Triv's ego would never let him understand the responsibilty that comes with the ratings he enjoys. He is oblivious to at least half the demeaning comments he makes on a daily basis and it's a miracle he hasn't been the focal point of a lawsuit to this point. The station managment and owners certainly love the ratings, but he opens them up to potential liability almost a daily basis. Today, he whined about the "lack of class" displayed by Miguel Tejada for having his children act up while conducting an interview at the All Star Game. Triv displays his class by constantly eating on the air, berating his staff publicly, making racist remarks, making sexist remarks, and delivering the same sad commercials (enter company name here) ad nauseum. His dream is to just stay at home in his underwear and play Texas Hold 'Em. I hope his dream comes true.

"So, did you alredy know this was about Trivosonno before you even clicked to read this? LOL"

Yep, I guessed right. Far be it from me to defend Trivosono's boorish remarks, but how is he in hot water? What will they do if he refuses to mend his ways, send another press release? It's hard to understand why they are giving him free publicity. There does not exactly seem to be a firestorm brewing.

Isn't it actually Jim Meltzer?

It's hard to find out much about The AIDS Task Force of Greater Cleveland. Do they even have a web site? What do they do? I notice too that you edited out the contact name on the press release. Why would you do that? It is after all a press release. <P ID="signature">______________

Mike Trivosonno is a clown act. HE may not understand this, but management knows full well that the whole "hook" of the Triv show is this big, fat, uneducated boob with a limited vocabulary attempting to discuss world affairs and social issues. He is a fish (or whale, actually) out of water and is completely hilarious as he comes off like a caveman trying to absorb the naunces and complications of the modern world.

Generally, it is harmless fun to listen to this poor fellow stumble his way through any subject other than sports, babes and beer. But occasionally, like with the AIDS issue, his complete ignorance and ridiculous statements have the potential to do real harm by spreading misinformation and fear.

But hey, management won't stop him. They want him to be the unintentially funny dumbell or else they don't have a show.

Good post, that about sums it up!

Give Triv Credit

I'll give the guy some credit. At the very least, Triv has the brass ones to say on air what a majority of his audience is thinking.

Now before you go bashing me....I'll stop for a moment and let you know my brother-in-law Scott, is HIV positive, so I know what I'm talking about. When the family first discovered Scott was positive, the same fears swept over all of us. While we all love him dearly, could we eat on the same place settings? Could we share the same bathroom? And so on. Of course we know the truth, but the majority of American’s do not know what living with HIV means. The fears are real, even if unjust

The Triv show is not a public forum. The FCC long ago abolished fair practices on the air. Triv is entertainment, pure and simple, and apparently, very relatable.

Scott btw is teriffic. I'm sure he'll outlive me.

And believe it or not....

...he's done exactly what he's paid to do, which is to get people talking about him...in a plus OR minus capacity..and that's what the AIDS Task Force and you all have done.
Which, all in all, is much more entertaining than talking about (and reading about) that #%$@*&^ "Jack" format that has everyone hyp-mo-tised.

Re: Give Triv Credit

> Scott btw is teriffic. I'm sure he'll outlive me.

I am sure that he is teriffic.

Let's just hope that if he ever slips and falls on the street that Triv is not the only guy around to help, because--remember--he would refuse to touch him.

I wouldn't exactly call this free publicity as if it's a good thing. This is one of the last things a company needs -- is to be brought to the attention of something like this. What's next? Pissing off gays?

Who cares if I deleted the number? It's not relevant to this PR anyway. If you're involved in the community, then you do know what organizations do what. It's up to you to educate yourself on groups in the community.

"Always"? Yeah, Ok Dr. Drama. Unless there's a gun to your head, you don't have to read my posts or anyone else's for that matter. Now, why don't you go back to the Columbus board and join the rest of the clueless ones in your continuous bashing of WNCI. Yep, the name does say it all. Get over it.

Still waiting for your sample hour over on the CHR/Pop board,
oh Great Radio God...

:)

I'm just waiting for them to change the moniker to "97.9, The Ghetto Superstar". They seem to have some fixation on that worn out song.<P ID="signature">______________

AIDS Taskforce needs help

"I wouldn't exactly call this free publicity as if it's a good thing. "

It may or may not be a good thing but it is indisputably publicity and it is free, ergo "free publicity". As I've said but you have apparently chosen to ignore, I don't endorse his uninformed remarks. I just don't think that sending out a bunch of press releases in a misguided attempt to gin up some outrage is effective. Maybe in 1985 it was.

"Who cares if I deleted the number? It's not relevant to this PR anyway."

:) Think about what you just said.. the contact information is relevant to any press release! That's why they put it there! Do they want publicity or not?

"If you're involved in the community, then you do know what organizations do what. It's up to you to educate yourself on groups in the community."

No it's not. It's up to the groups to inform (some say would say "educate")the community. That's why they get tax exempt status. It costs money to get the word out.

The AIDS Task Force has apparently been around a long time but they seem to need some help. I plan to donate myself after I get their financials and satisfy myself that the money is well-spent. I managed to locate the phone number (no thanks to you) and called them today to find out the contact name. This poor organization apparently shares a receptionist (I'm not sure but the guy who answered the phone was rushed and unintelligible because of it) and I ended up in someone's voice mail. She only said her name once and I didn't get it. Oh, and their website is down for unknown reasons according to the guy who answered the phone. http://www.aidstaskforce.org

I like their mission: "The AIDS Taskforce of Greater Cleveland (ATGC), established in 1983, is the oldest AIDS service organization in Ohio. The Taskforce serves as a primary provider in Cleveland of both community based HIV prevention education, and non-medical direct services to people living with HIV and AIDS. The AIDS Taskforce of Greater Cleveland provides a compassionate and collaborative response to the needs of people infected, affected and at risk of HIV/AIDS."

but there are better ways of going about it than getting into a pissing contest with a radio jock. Now if their goal was to make themselves and those who already agree feel superior and insult someone.. mission accomplished. But you can't insult people and have any hope of persuading them.

As I note in a certain blog linked below, reporting on Triv's insensitive comments is roughly equivalent to reporting that there's a thunderstorm in mid-July.

(Lots of other good stuff in there, BTW, including the latest update from the Harold Glunt Radio Empire!)

Still waiting for the sample hour of WCIL, too...

You got it?

Not Too Bright, Eh?

Hey pal, don't bring your issues from another board onto this one. Plus, if you had an ounce of brillance, you can look up (most) stations playlists online. Oh, you don't know how to do that? Aww, that's too bad. At least it's obvious you can use the "search" function on this board. Congrats.

And if you insist on being a jerk with me, you'll find yourself banned real quick.
