Hiss Gone From WLS Today, when will it finally be OVER with?

Still off as of this morning. I am beginning to have hope that the hiss from hell has ended at 890.
Ain't thrown a scope on it yet, but sounds kinda like they're back to 10khz (or so) bandwidth, too.
Or the cessation of hiss is so stunning as to sound like FM compared to what they were with iboc.

Today is another clean day for WLS. :) I will be out in New Hampshire till Friday, and I'd appreciate someone back in Chicago
region keeping us informed of what happens with WLS over the next 6 days.

Can someone tell us if HD was on WLS monday (yesterday) or tuesday (today)? I'm out of state and would really like to know what happening there.

They have been transmitting in C-QUAM (AM stereo) day and night according to my 1994 Explorer Radio! Stereo's a waste for a talk radio station, but some spots and station promos sound cool!

That's good news. I have no C-QUAM radios, but AM stereo is not a waste as there is a apparent loudness advantage of 3-6 db for C-QUAM decoding.
If I recall, this advantage does not extend to regular AM mono decoding, but the audio HAS certainly been dense and punchy since iboc's been off.

Perhaps D. E. or RF Burns would like to speculate on why WLS is no longer running HD...... ::)

No HD yesterday or today - at least when I tuned in. They sound so good on my radio without the hiss messing up the background and limiting the richness of the audio. Hope it's off for good!

No HD on when I've tuned in today.

As of noon (at least) it seems to be back. Flipped on my radio and heard the flattened audio levels mixed with a background of hiss that is the hallmark of this 'marvelous' technology - at least to the 99.97% of listeners who hear their favorite AM stations in analog.

Citadel, you suck for flipping this crapper back on! It's a shame.

WLS was pretty strong again at night in Houston, not like it was in the 70's and 80's, but there. I'll see how badly degraded it is tonight --- now that iHiss is back.

They normally shut off the jammer at sunset, so it should be fine. I hope that continues - because IBOC at night coming from WLS would really stink!

At least they are still doing C-QUAM at night which is WLS tradition ... HD-off-at-night has been a Citadel network engineering directive for a while ... they know deep down that IBOC is defective technology (like BPL and U-Verse as we hams are finding out!)

Maybe it took a week for the check to clear. ::)

HD = Horrendously Deficient

9:24PM -- getting HD lock(!?!) using only the dipole on my F1HD at about 35 miles (in Porter County, Indiana). When did they start running the jammer at night again?

And when did the jammer actually start managing to provide a usable HD signal, indoors, next to a computer, at over 30 miles?

Maybe they got a secret FCC/IBOC sanctioned boost to 1 Megawatt?

Yeah, really! Of course, I meant the loop, not the dipole (which, at the approximate same distance cant get FM-HD lock indoors). I've had WLS lock HD with an outdoor antenna, but never with anything indoors, and especially not with the computer and 42" flat panel both running right next to it. But if they are running the decepticon at night again regularly, it really is a loss for everyone, as their analog sounded great without it.

These stations spent the money for the decepticons and damn it, they are going to use them whether it kills them or not

Luckily, the noisy bastard is off as of 8:36 PM Sunday Night. I suppose someone just forgot to flip the switch last week? Or maybe it failed again, who knows?

But yes, I really feel for those who have their 1938 Zeniths and whatnot, but I can even tell the difference on the F1HD or the Pioneer car stereo, let alone a nice 80's Chrysler C-QUAM! Regardless, turn it on or turn it off!! Enough of this back and forth.

If it honestly failed this much, and I was in charge, it would be in the "back room" with the rest of the equipment to be cannibalized.

It seems CC's KFAN in Minneapolis has had their IBOC off for a week or so now...I can actually listen to an outstate polka station on 1150 now, which has been obliterated the last few years by the hash.

That must have been some sales pitch by iBiquity to convince people to buy in to this defective technology. They put their money into a hard selling pitch person, got some people drunk over lunch, or used scare tactics. Something. If somebody was sober, I don't think even the late Billy Mays could have sold this white elephant.
