Historic New Year's Day Format Flips

January 1, 2006 has come and gone and there were no major format flips---apparently in both Carolinas. So, chime in with format flips of New Years' past:

*In the late 80s, there was 93.3 WBBO's flip from Top 40 to the nifty, jazzy-sounding "The Breeze". The station still had studios in Forest City.

*Contemporary Christian 94.1 WWGL, Lexington, flipped to 80s "Hitz 94".

*Lite Rock 98.9(Spartanburg-Greenville) flipped to Magic 98.9

Don't forget...

WKZL in 1992 switching from CHR to Hot AC at '107.5 The Eagle, playing the hits with no hard rock or rap'.

In 1996, 95.7 WXRC switched from active rock 'The Panther' to triple-a 'Deep Cuts 95 dot 7'.

Also, don't forget several years later on January 1st, 1995, WBBO (by then an Alternative-leaning CHR named Q-93) ditched the format to become 93-Q Country WNTQ. That format lasted about 18 months before flipping to Active Rock as The Planet.

Great memories there. Like so many that came and went in the blink of an eye. I always thought "Power 93" WBBO-Fm sounded pretty good. Tight list, etc. Bill Catcher did a pretty good job with that. WANS was still on at the time, and ruled the roost. Something I never understood in that market. Thanks for the memory.

I agree with you BB! Power 93 did sound pretty good. Bill was nice enough to let me do weekends when i was on the beach. I was driving from Charlotte, and in some parts of Charlotte you could pick up the signal. Bill didn't have any money to work with, but still had the station out in the public and played good tunes, so i thought! Cool topic/even better memory.
