HISTORY INTERNATIONAL: THE THIRD REICH

Anybody see this last night? Looks like it had been shown before, but this was the first time
I had watched it.

It was quite compelling and used all filmed footage from the period. I only watched the first show,
the RISE OF THE THIRD REICH. The second show was about the fall. They presented everything in
a timeline fashion which made it easier to follow and much more interesting than the usual TV documentary.

Yes, it was on before (originally on The History Channel) - and it is VERY compelling. Just before heading off to sleep, I noticed that HI was showing it and I arranged to have my DVR record it for viewing later. When it was on History, I caught the second half of the Fall. Fascinating stuff that was presented in from the German point of view. In some ways, chilling.

Perhaps this time I can catch the whole time.

We often bemoan the lack of great television programming here on the board. This series counters those arguments. VERY well done.

The History Channel (as it was called then) used to air so much WWII/Nazi documentaries that the network was nicknamed The Hitler Channel.

They still do on occasion, though usually during the day and on weekends.

If the Nazis had won the war (and thank God they didn't :) ), we WOULD be watching The Hitler Channel, along with Fair & Balanced Reich News, MRSPN (Master Race Sports Programming Network), and Normandy Shore on MTV.

Saying "we" is a stretch because many of us wouldn't be here (for one reason or another) had the Nazis won.

In the 1969s, I used to watch the CBS weekly half-hour documentary - The 20th Century - hosted by Walter Cronkite. Probably 90% of the shows were about World War II - typically Nazi Germany. At the time, it was only a decade and a half after the end of WW2, so perhaps it was still on everybody's minds. But more than that - I think it was because it was the first major war in mankind that was heavily documented on film - so there was a lot of material to be aired.

The 20th Century began airing in the mid-50's IIRC. They were on every Sunday afternoon in my market and it was my favorite show at that time.

I meant "in the 60s" - "69s" was a typo. Yes - I think I knew the program started in the 50s - it ran for many years - but I was too young to watch or appreciate history or documentaries until the 60s.

The History Channel or History International also has run (and still is running) a series about World War 2 in Color.

According to the promos, "there are scenes never seen on television before." Maybe it's just me but as an avid history buff I can swear I've seen the footage being aired on several documentaries about World War 2; the only difference is this footage is colorized.

HI and the History Channel also features a series on World War I, which is a British production.

Anyone remember the series that ran in the early 1960s with Robert Ryan as the narrator?

I wish the History Channel or HI would run that series also. Personally I think it's a lot better than the one currently being aired. Lot more footage of actual battle scenes; plus a great lead-in as to how the three emperors ( Wilhelm, Nicholas, and George V) bungled their way into the war.
