History of Rock and roll

If this is not the right place for this I apologize and accept the flaming.

Is Drake Chenault's History of rock and Roll, the 52 hours special hosted by Bill Drake available for collector purposes only? Also I would not mind locating the D/C produced "History of Country Music" hosted by Ralph Emery.

There were some copies floating around on alt.binaries.sounds.mp3.1960s

If you're familiar with usenet, and have a newsreader like Agent, you might want to see if someone would post a copy. I know of no place to get a copy of the show unless you're buying it for broadcast.

The copy that I heard on Usenet was the History of Rock & Roll, but I don't think it's the version that most people want. If anyone from Drake Chenault or "in the know" can clarify, please do. I'm still unclear on the chronology of the show and can't confirm the story below.

I, and a few other guys, were comparing notes on the History of Rock & Roll show and have determined that there were at least three "versions" of the program.

I ended up tracking down a guy who worked for Bill Drake, and he clarified the show in an e-mail. Here is what he said;

Three longform versions of the H.R.R. were produced. The first was the 1969 KHJ version, with narration by Humble Harve. The second was the award winner, the 1978 version which Bill Drake narrated and I wrote and co-produced. One easy way to tell if what you have is the 1978 version is to play the end of the timesweep in Hour 52. If the last song heard in the montage is "You Light Up My Life," it is the 1978 version.

I would love to find the second version myself.

The third version is what I think I heard in the newsgroup, but the poster put it up in mono, 48 khz, and it sounded bad even on an Ipod with ear buds. I think I had it for about 2 days then erased the files.

Check on usenet. Someone has to have a good copy .... somewhere.

I have the 1978 version, all 52 hours on reels in stereo. I thought there was a version on LP as well but that may have been the last version. I know that KenR had the updated version for sale to stations and collectors prior to going out of business. Somewhere I have the custom liners Bill cut for the station.

Wasn't there a fourth update in 1990? I remember some stations playing that one as well.

If you have a torrent search/download client such as uTorrent, you can find a copy that way (192kbps stereo) I believe it's the 1978 version, but I'd have to check. The one I have is cut into individual segments for convenient CD burning.

I have the Bill Drake version. It was recorded off-air from KOOL-FM Phoenix and contains their air checks but the commercials have been edited out. It is MP3 320kbps.

I checked the site again and it does appear to be the 1978 version:

This is the final released version of The History of Rock and Roll, produced over a three year period for KHJ, Los Angeles where the original aired in February, 1969. Later that year, it aired on WLS and WABC. This 1978 version contains most of the original 24 hours, plus updates through December, 1977 (which are in stereo.) A total of 38 CD's and nearly 45 hours of music, hundreds of interviews and comments about the first 25 years of Rock and Roll. One of the best radio series ever produced. Will fit on one DL-DVD in MP3 format.

Try this link:

You will need something like uTorrent or BitTorrent to download it.

Thanks for this link...

I've never downloaded from this type of service, it is downloading, but saying it will take anywhere from 7 to 12plus days...is that normal (I see it's 34 hrs worth of audio)?

I just got a very cool package dropped off in my studio today. It was David Lee Roth's voice track from "Running With The Devil". Call me goofy, but I think that's a pretty cool thing to have. I'll be hanging on to that for a good long time!

Maybe I'll even crank call some people with the audio. It may go something like this:
Hello: "Ahha aaa".
Who is this? "I'm only gonna tell you one time ahh ahhha!"
What are you doing screaming at me like that? "Running with the devil".
CLICK!

Your downlad should start speeding up after a few minutes as long as you have a high speed connection.

BTW, I also remember a version of the show coming out in '89 or '[90. I remember WTVN in Columbus among other stations running it. Does anyone know anything about that version? It would probably be on CD. Can't remember who the announcer was, but it wasn't Humble Harv or Bill Drake.

It took me about 48 hours of download time to get the 6+GB file. I'm on a 1.5mb download DSL line but typical download speeds are a bit less than 1mb/sec. I fiddled with my connection and torrent settings quite a bit but could never get into the "green" incoming connection status everyone says is necessary for great D/L speed.

There was a 1981 version too, with the #1's montage ending with "I Love A Rainy Night" by Eddie Rabbit

The 1981 version is the one I know. Anybody know where to get this version?

Thats about right for me too. After my other post, it... (DL time reduced to about 2 days) and was pretty close to that. I'm really happy to have my own copy of this show. Thanks to whoever took the time to make this available, and Thank you Chad for the link!

BoyWithThornInSide The 1981 version is the one I know. Anybody know where to get this version?

I think it's available to hear on the "reel repository" website at "reelradio.com". I've heard it there before, but now one has to subscribe / donate to access it. Check it out!

the reel radio access is just 10 bucks a year..cheap for all the stuff in there..maybe off subject a little..but anyone have a source/site for radio commercials from the 60's/70's? i found the usual google stuff..but i'd like to find more from the wls/cklw/wcfl/wabc kcbq etc... all the great am rockers of that era.i have about 300 now..as well as 300 or so jingles..but always wanting more..thanks..

The version I have is the original reels from Drake-Chenault that were sent to the station at that time. Not sure if I still have the cue sheets but they have been posted somewhere I recall. Feel free to E-Mail me off the list
