History Question (CHS FM)

Good Morning folks...

Question for those who may know...

WYBB Folly Beach was not originally on 98.1 nor was it WYBB. It was WCCG, a 3kW class A on 97.7. Signed on in late 87, LM Communications bought in early 88 for about $2 million, and the switch to 98.1 and a 50kW signal occurred in summer of '88. Seems like they stayed right on the same tower as present (not their new CP location)

I know that this station was actually on the air and owned by "Charleston County Wireless" after an intense application round with at least six different applicants. There is a Linked-In profile I will not include for privacy reasons (gentleman has been out of radio for 25 years) who mentioned that he did swing shift air shifts, and helped to plan/switch the transmitter from 97.7 to 98.1. -- sounds like a fun job for a guy in his 20's!

Can anybody tell me what exactly WCCG 97.7's format was? Did it garner any ratings or word of mouth? I am pretty sure 98Rock didn't sign on until summer of '88 at the same time it went 50kW so it seems to reason it was on for about a year.

Also, what the heck was there to listen to rock-wise before WYBB and WAVF came on? It seems like CHS was missing a rock station from the early 80's when WKTM-FM switched until 98.1/96.1 signed on.

And this sounds ill-informed and stupid, but would the horrid signal and flat sound that WYBB has been known for (at least when I lived near there from 07-11) have something to do with 28-year-old equipment designed for a different frequency?

Go Gamecocks!
