I posted a reply to this before the board burped and deleted it, but I'm pretty sure that AM 1000 was darker for much longer than what you listed....I don't think it was ever on as WZIP or WEXI, either. I recall it being off the air when I travelled to the area in late '89, and don't recall the station coming back (as a simulcast of WJBW-FM) until the FCC's "come back or lose your license" decree of sorts of 1996.

In fact, in a call I placed to the station in late '89, the person on duty (presumabaly the 99.5 jock) denied there was even an AM.

IIRC, the move from 96.7 to 99.5 was to make room for WPOW moving from 96.3 to 96.5, which made room for WXDJ 95.7 to sign on. The move to 106.3 was to increase power.

Which also cleared the way for WLEQ Bonita Spring to move from 95.9 A to 96.1 C which is why WMJX Miami moved from 96.3 C to 96.5 C in the first place. It was WLEQ that started the whole daisy chain frequency moves involving multiple markets that included Fort Myers - Naples, Miami, Homestead and Jupiter. With the WMJX move to 96.5 C, this opened 95.7 C as a drop-in for Homestead which previously did not exist nor was the frequency allotted prior to any FM moves. Homestead's 95.7 C was site restricted to the far South of Miami-Dade because it was required to protect WOVV 95.5 C Fort Pierce (West Palm Beach). Eventually WOVV downgraded to a C1 while Homestead also downgraded to a C1 which enabled WOVV to move closer to West Palm and Homestead to move a little closer to Miami proper. Homestead's 95.7 eventually downgraded again to a C2 with a TL move and COL change to North Miami.

FM 96.7 "A" was originally licensed to Jupiter until around 1985 although I don't remember the exact year it changed to 99.5. The frequency move was a direct result of WLEQ 95.9 wanting to upgrade to full "C" status by moving to 96.1. The only way that could happen is if WMJX 96.3 "C" Miami moved to 96.5 "C". The only way WMJX could move to 96.5 was to move WRYZ 96.7 Jupiter off of 96.7 and was ultimately moved to 99.5. The WMJX move opened 95.7 "C" as a newly created allotment or "drop-in" for Homestead at the time.
