Hit 106 dies Thursday

So we've got Thunder making the move to 106.3 & 106.5, and the return of B98.5 on the horizon.

What we can gather from this whole situation is that Press Communications made Matt Knight the fall guy for Hit 106's weak performance. Truth is, you could have brought in someone from one of the top 5 markets in the country to program a Top 40 format here, and it wouldn't have made a difference. The market is oversaturated with stations of this ilk. Hit 106 just couldn't compete with Z100 or 94.3 The Point, nor did it have the promotional and financial muscle of 92.3 Now, and that's what led to its demise.

For his part, Matt did all that he could. He went above and beyond the call of duty, just as he did with G Rock and B98.5 during his time at those stations. He was a consummate professional and it always showed in his work. But it was an uphill battle given the fact that the Top 40 audience was very well served (and that there were a lot of angry G Rock fans who avoided Hit 106 like the plague). Terminating him was a terrible move, but not surprising - from cleaning house shortly after taking over WBBO in '04, to the genius decision of the GM at the time to replace popular morning show hosts Brian Phillips & Jen Ursillo with his friend Kramer, to what we have just seen (others apparently have been let go), Press has a track record of very impulsive decisions regarding every frequency they own with the exception of The Breeze stations.

So it looks like they're going to relaunch B98.5 - WITHOUT any of the personalities that people enjoyed hearing. Let's call it what it is: an anonymous, faceless Top 40 station. I'd bet against it having any alternative rock slant, since those who were programming the station at the time (Matt Knight & Race, now over at 105.7 The Hawk) will have nothing to do with it. From what I do know about this station, it's going to be a disaster. I expect it to be heavy on the bubblegum pop that's on the charts right now, without any of the decent tracks from back in the day (i.e. Snoop Dogg & Ini Kamoze). And it looks as though the abysmal morning show team of Pork Roll & Eggs are going to be retained at the new station as well.

Of course, there's definitely a major void in the market with a lack of alternative rock on FM radio, and G Rock should have been brought back. However, with the strong shares that Thunder was getting on its Ocean County signal, I can't fault Press for trying to build on its ratings by reaching out to Monmouth County as well. But this new B98.5 is an absolute farce. I predict it gets a 1 or less, with the unnecessary format, the lack of familiar personalities (let's face it: the rapport at B98.5 between the jocks and their audience made it something more than your typical hit outlet), and the aforementioned bad joke of a morning show.

It's a major loss for local radio the way Matt was dismissed. He deserved far better for his efforts. He was dealt a tough hand and did the best he could with it, and I don't think some person from out of the market is suddenly going to make B98.5 succeed where Hit 106 failed. I definitely think we'll see Matt turn up somewhere in the market, as many stations could benefit from his talent. If they haven't done it already, Millennium Radio should definitely try to contact him - he would be a great fit for Shore Alternative and The Hawk (which would then have 3 ex-B98.5 personalities - that would be 3 more than the new B98.5 is going to have). Whatever happens, Matt, we wish you well and we're confident that you'll be back on the radio very soon. All the best to you.

Here is a press story about the switch:

Press Communications LLC said today its 106.3 FM station will switch formats in a move that will bring country music to Monmouth County.

Beginning Sept. 15, the Wall-based company will convert its Top 40-playing 106.3 FM/106.5 FM to what it calls country rock. And it will move the Top 40 format on the dial to 98.5FM, an Ocean County-based station that plays country.

"Country music is a format with an extremely loyal listener base,'' said Rich Morena, general manager. "We saw the void in Monmouth County and the demand was overwhelming from our Monmouth County fan base, and now we are expanding our reach to meet that demand.''

Press Communications owns six stations in Monmouth and Ocean counties. It is not affiliated with the Asbury Park Press.

The company has been searching for a highly rated format for its 106.3 station. After a decade of playing alternative rock, the station in January 2009 switched to Top 40 hits. Morena said ratings improved but the station had trouble setting itself apart from New York radio stations.

The country format, which Morena said was popular in Ocean County, will feature artists ranging from former American Idol Carrie Underwood to up-and-coming star Matt Kennon.

Actually it would be 6 former B98.5-ers on 105.7 The Hawk if Knight were to return to Millennium, like you suggest:

1 - Knight

2 - Andy Chase
3 - Race
4 - Tony Pimps
5 - Mike Merrell
6 - Pete Lepore

and I've even heard Silent Jay (Jason Matthews) on Shore Alternative and 94.3 The Point.

But yeah, you're correct, "3 full-time on-air formers." Just supporting your point, Soulcrusher. :)

Wow... That illustrates A LOT about The Hawk and it's "offerings" when it comes to talent and programming! Yikes!!

Sorry to hear you're leaving.

If you get hooked up with a station that would be interested in subleasing their HD channels please send me an email.

We're located South West of your station - 98.5 FM Bridgeton & 97.9 FM Cape May.

A guy named Mario did some great imaging for us after he left B98.5 .

Press is opposed to HD radio entirely. Most likely because if 106.3 and 106.5 both had HD they would interfere with each other.

While those stations are all great, they don't have the reach that G-Rock had. 5 people have HD radios. G-Rock will most likely never be forgotten, and it's completely understandable why people still wish for G-Rock to return even after more than a year.

It seems clear that Press doesn't care about the alternative rock format. They blew up a successful G-Rock to try to push another CHR in the already saturated marketplace. Then 92.3 Now launched and further eroded the tiny Hit 106 audience. Hit 106's highest ratings were lower than G-Rock's last ratings. Press could have done what CBS did in 2007 to bring back a well-known station with passionate fans after a format change failed. With the loss of K-Rock and WJSE, G-Rock would have the market to itself today. Now that the Bennies and Jersey Shore wannabees are gone, there's no one left to listen to Hit 106 so it's a great time to flip the format.

The only thing I liked about Hit 106 was the Hit Mix at 5, which I hope they keep on B98.5. I wonder why they got rid of Matt Knight who was an integral part of B98.5.

They've got a better reach than G-Rock has now.

Unless I miss my guess, everyone here has a computer. I don't particularly care how you listen, just please do so!

Thanks for your "support" of all the former WBBO staffers.

Hey, you know what opinions are like; everybody's got one.

/I'll be here all week. Try the veal.

Well press communications is bringing back b98.5 so this means they made a mistake when they got rid of it in 2005, now they understand it that's why they decided to bring it back is a smart move it took them a while to figured out. They never should have got rid of b98.5 in my opinion. Coutry format will move up north and will cover northern nj 106.3/106.5 northern nj needed a country station because there isn't one so they filling up the hole. I just think they late on the move. Country format should have been on 106.3/106.5 for years there was no need of chr top 40 on those dials, northern nj has enough top 40.

I live within a few miles of WBBO's transmitter. Here, I get 94.3 The Point, 95.1 WAYV, Wired 96.5, 99.3 Kiss FM, 102.1 Q102, and SoJo 104.9 clear as a bell. Many of these stations either didn't exist or had a different sound when B98.5 went off the air, so they render this station even more unnecessary. Add to that the fact that there's no Matt Knight, Race, Andy Chase, or anyone else from B's past, and that makes it an even bigger waste of time. What Ocean County really needed is what it doesn't have anywhere on FM: an alternative rock station. However, I don't want Press to put it on the air and screw it up again, as much as it pains me to say (meaning we'll probably never get something close to the G Rock or FM 106.3 sound back on FM again, since they own the library and the trademarks). Best case scenario is B98.5 being a disastrous failure and Press being forced to sell it.

Yes. The best case scenario is for the station to fail and people to lose their jobs. Classy.

That's a complete misinterpretation. The best case scenario is for the station to end up in better hands, run by people who actually understand the business.

And you want to talk about losing jobs - just look at the lack of stability at Press Communications over the past few years. It doesn't matter whether we're talking about the original B98.5, G Rock, or Hit 106 ... Press goes through DJs/PDs/MDs like mad. For instance, everyone aside from Matt Knight was let go after they acquired B (and now he's gone as well). And I lost count of how many different midday and late night DJs they had on G Rock, even though I was a frequent listener during both time periods.

Compare the jock lineups at Millennium and Greater Media stations, and then compare them to Press and the way they've gone through personnel at just about every station they own (The Breeze being the only exception). I'm thinking that WHTG had a greater number of jocks in 8 years of Press ownership than 16 years of Gade ownership, due to all the tinkering and shuffling. Draw your own conclusion as to why that happened. Clearly Press goes about running their stations a different way than the competition, and believe that on-air talent is secondary.

If Press had been making all the right moves, and had done their best to cultivate talented people and keep them, you might have a point.

Is the B going to be on 106.5 too or is 106.3 and 106.5 going to be country too? Why doesn't 98.5 get a signal upgrade to cover Atlantic City or something I'm sure they could take on Wild and Kiss and AYV. AYV can't make its mind and Wild is horrible and so is Kiss. At least give it some LP signal or something at 98.5 as a translator!

B is only going to be on 98.5. Thunder will be on both 106.3 and 106.5. And no, B is not going to take on Wild, Kiss, or AYV because B is a "Monmouth-Ocean" market station, whereas Wild, Kiss, & AYV are in the "Atlantic City-Cape May" market.
