On further review, looks like songs from a format that wouldn't have many listeners under 45. Probably wouldn't work.

Put that format on 1440, 1400, 1330, 1270, 1230, or 1120...hell, let's go for the gold: 1520!! Sign me up and send me a diary! I'm there 24/7, baby!

/hobo out

p.s. and let me add "Navy Blue" and "Pictures of Matchstick Men" to the playlist

Work In Progress

We now have a total of 85 songs. According to "modern" programming practice, 215 more and we have a radio format.

I'm not sure how many times I want to hear "Wildfire" or "When We Were (Was?) Fab", so I hope they're not in the "A" rotation...

For my part, I'd like to throw in "Funk 49" and "Walk Away"...

Big Mike, I'm disappointed that you've left out so many of the great tunes from Motown.  We need more Stevie Wonder, Tops, Temps, Supremes, Martha & the Vandellas.  And how about some of the Atlantic/Stax artists like Wilson Pickett, The Rascals, Sam & Dave and Otis Redding?  C'mon, Bro...let's have more soul!

Hellyeah, but it's the best I could do after my fourth Genny... lemme see, now that I'm only slightly more lucid:

Soul Man
(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction
I Can't Help Myself (Sugar Pie Honey Bunch)
Can I get A Witness
Chain of Fools
Wooly Bully
Slip Away
Hang On Sloopy
I Fought the Law
In the Midnight Hour
Can I Change My Mind
Five O'Clock World
The Letter
On Broadway
I'd Wait a Million Years
Green Onions
Knock On Wood
When a Man Loves a Woman
Tell It Like It Is
Evil Ways
Can I Change My Mind
Startin All Over Again
Tramp
Higher and Higher
Respect

My brain hurts... I shoulda written stuff down... but then, I probably wouldn't be able to read my handwriting this morning if I had found the list, which prob'ly woulda been soggy. Feel free to help out.

I like everything you guys put on the list, no problem here! My list would be even bigger but man you don't want to go there.

For me I'd like a generous helping of pre-Beatles era hits. Lesley Gore, Four Seasons, Elvis, Ricky, Gene Pitney, Connie Francis, Crests, Flamingos, etc. I like lots from the "Beatles" era too!

I also enjoy finding an oldie that I hadn't heard before like The Dells, "Stay in My Corner".

Hit Bound

Creedence. We need some Creedence. Anything BUT "Proud Mary". Talk about burned to a crisp...

And, in a lunar rotation, The George Baker Selection's finest... "Little Green Bag"

Wow, I remember Jack Mindy used to play that at least once a week in the 'gold' part of the rotation in his afternoon show on WHEN in 1973...along with Thunderclap Newman's "Something in the Air". That station was one of the first genuine full-service ACs back in the early 70s, along with WGR in Buffalo and WGAR in Cleveland, and had a HUGE (by today's standards) gold library which accounted for about 1/3 of the music rotation in any given hour. The gold library was also so heavy on 1963-72 cuts and 1972-73 recurrents, and so light on 1955-62 stuff, that if you got an aircheck of it from 1973 or 1974 and played it back now you'd almost think you were listening to a current classic-hits station like WCBS-FM or WSEN.

WHEN, of course, was pretty liberal for its time in music selection, especially on letting the air personalities choose the gold they played. When Jack got to WBEN in Buffalo, Bob Wood had the music for his and everyone else's shows pretty much pre-programmed by daypart and tempo. It worked well...and also freed up the personality to concentrate on what he was going to say.

Me thinks you drink too much!

I wonder how many Genny Creams it takes to dredge The Blues Magoos out of your subconscious?

Let me add an end-of-night favorite from the late, lamented World's Greatest Party Bar:

Little Willy by The Sweet

I'm not sure if we're heading as far down the glam road as "Ballroom Blitz" and Golden Earring's "Radar Love"

One more Genny and Mr. Radknowski might have slid as far down the list as "I Had Too Much Too Dream Last Night" by The Electric Prunes!

Perish the thought!

What are you trying to say? "I Had Too Much To Dream Last Night" is on my iPod, heck I even spent 99 cents for it! Thus proving I think we could all program the best sounding station that wouldn't get ratings!

I have to say that WKBW was my station in the '60's till I was kidnapped by my parents and forced to live in Florida. Some thought I was lucky but I always missed Buffalo. We visited a few times in the summer and from what I heard I think WGR would have been my station in the '70's. What a great radio station! WGR never seems to get enough credit.

One more Genny and the list might have contained "Psychotic Reaction" -Count Five; "Pushin' Too Hard" -The Seeds; "Chickaboom" -Danny Dewdrop and "Let it All Hang Out" -The Hombres. Two more Genny's and "They're Coming to Take Me Away" might have made the list. Never again will I post while under the influence (PUI) although some might argue that my posts look about the same either way.

No question about that. WGR at that period was primo! Stan in the morning, PD Larry Anderson middays, the great Frank Benny in PM Drive, and Randy Michaels (the future CC Satan) evenings.

All of us really respected what WGR was doing at that time. Great AC music, superb air personalities, and an excellent news department.

I remember hearing Shane at the Erie County Fair or as we locals say "Hamburg Fair" having a ball and making fun of the people who came by the WGR booth. I really enjoyed his act. If ever there was a guy born to be on the radio it was Shane.

Oh, Brother

Yeah, it's too bad that Shane lost track of where his "act" ended and real life began. Not the most pleasant man to work with or be around.
