Hit Parade Radio Over

I had a feeling....

I learned an important lesson: If you have money, the programming is easy. And you have to get the money side of the equation worked out before you commit to the programming. And having great programming doesn't ensure that the money will follow. It HAS to be the other way around or this is what happens. I made the mistake not so long ago starting a venture built around a great programming idea. Everyone I talked to agreed it was a great idea, and they all committed their artists to it. But at the end of the day, the sponsorship didn't come through, and the idea never got off the ground. Fortunately for me, I hadn't put a lot of money in it, and I have other ventures that covered my costs. The hard part was going back to the artists and everyone else with the bad news. Reading this story reminds me of my experience. We hear the phrase "If you build it, they will come," and we have come to believe it's true. My experience is that sometimes they don't.

As I listen right now to affiliate 1570 WFRL Freeport IL's 'net stream, there's no voicetracking at all, so take that as a confirmation that "The end is near".

WFRL and 1170 WFDL Waupun WI are two of the few affiliates in this part of the Midwest that will be left in the lurch....I'll keep you updated as to what the replacement programming will be.

I sampled it online and wasn't overly impressed with the music. :)

I wasn't impressed either. What were they doing different that other oldie stations aren't doing on air and on the internet. I thought Uncle Lar was boring as hell on there. Without all that great 70s processing and contest to make them bigger than life they sounded like every other twit.

I'd say in listening to the on-line feed 90% of the music sounded great(sometimes they went a little too far back and played a handful of obscure tunes once in awhile).....in my opinion---Chuck Brinkman sounded horrible on this format. I listened a number of times when they were feeding his show and it was dis-jointed, dis-connected and he sounded like someone from a bad small market. Wink sounded great---smooth a very polished, Larry Lujack was just Larry Lujack....at times sounding very good and at other times like he just didn't care anymore and at times very negative. The night jock sounded good and gave some great artist info/trivia, but the weekend guy they had on there with the southern accent....PLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEZE....he sounded worse than Chuck Brinkman did. Sounded like he belonged on a small southern gospel AM station. I'm really sorry to see the idea of "Hit Parade Radio" didn't fly. But if your morning is to set the pace for the day....Chuck Brinkman all i can say is: zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. This was one place to hear some of those great MOR songs that no one really plays anymore. It was odd to hear some of those classics, and then hear them play "Feel Like Makin' Love" by Bad Company----that and a few other trainwrecks that I heard......made me think---if Chuck Brinkman is picking the songs....he needs to do a much better job.

Just my two cents....perhaps another similar format can be launched......minus the Brinkman.......they even played a few re-recordings of hits---NOT the original--like "Release Me" by Engelbert(NOT THE ORIGINAL), and they played Engelbert singing "For The Good Times," how about Ray Price---that IS the hit version. And there were a handful of others...you'd think Chuck Brinkman would know what the originals sounded like.....the re-recordings sounded very cheesy. If it was a 20-something putting the songs in their computer that would make sense, but a supposed pro like Chuck---what a major mistake letting him do mornings and program....again my humble opinion!

Had a chance to listen to WFDL on the way home from work tonight, and here's what I heard:

After the hourly CBS news, their automation went into spots.....then to a HPR liner - and then MORE spots.......anoher HPR liner and MORE SPOTS! 'FDL blew thru the hour's breaks before going to dead air.

Somebody there didn't read their email before calling it a weekend. ::)

On the other hand upon further review and listening to WFRL online, I think they did a very smart thing: They pulled the plug early. As of right now, I'm hearing a very good mix of 60s - 70s oldies wit HPR and some classic WFRL jingles. I know for a fact they already had a lot of this music in their automation system since they were locally programmed before.

Scott Thompson and the crew are to be commended - they had a plan!

That sounds more like the influence of John Rook, not Brinkman. If you've read his blog, he liked to diverge from standard hits. However, I'm pretty sure the Engelbert version was a bigger hit than Little Esther's, and even she wasn't the original. I tend to prefer Esther's, but that's just me.
