Hit The Road, Jack, And Make Way For KXNT On FM!

KXNT has been slowly slipping in the book, an FM simulcast is how CBS handles their dominant AMs when they slide. Take a look at KCBS in San Francisco... or what is rumored to happen next in LA!
 
I did NOT expect that to happen... though looking at the ratings 100.5 Jack FM they're not doing as great. You think other Jack stations will flip?
 
Why would CBS make their plans known for FM talk two weeks before its debut. I wouldn't put it past Beasley to speed up their Riviera transactions and simulcast KDWN on one of their new FMs.

CBS has some amazingly successful AMs. They are going to do whatever it takes to keep them relevant.

KCBS was seeing its audience getting older, with more and more of it outside the traditional sales demo of 25-54.

They realized that the generation under 55 did not grow up on AM and resisted or rejected using it.

KGO is not even in the top 15 in 25-54... but with no FM to employ to lower its average age.

There is only a collection of rumors on boards like this, based on 12+ numbers. One of them has CBS taking a station that is among the top ten highest billers in the entire country and switching it to some kind of news or talk. Those are not rumors, they are fantasies.
 
I have many times over the years said that CBS should flip 100.5 or 107.5 to talk KXNT-FM. I think this is a great move. Few people in this town listen to AM. Not only will their audience get larger, the demos will get younger as well.

I believe there are more than 5. Right off the top of my head I can think of LA, Chicago, Dallas, San Diego, Seattle, and Minneapolis..there are others.

Maybe CBS heard or had a hunch that Beasley was going to simulcast KDWN on 107.9? If this was Beasley's plans they should now reconsider as this market can't support two FM talk stations.

With KKJJ out of the Variety Hits format this leaves all the more of a hole for 107.9 to move in some type of Gen X direction, like an updated version of the old "80s and more" STAR which did well for years up until JACK entered the scene.

Let's assume for a minute that 107.9 stays alternative and there are no other format changes in the near future. Where will the KKJJ listeners migrate to? I know they didn't have huge ratings but it would still be nice for other stations to gain their former audience. My guess is the POINT will benefit since JACK did play a lot of classic rock. What other stations could gain from this?
 
Listeners will finally be able to hear KXNT inside those big downtown hotels and office buildings with that FM simulcast. No AM signal is able to penetrate those things.

... or at the very least, there will be five Jack stations left operated by CBS-FM. There's plenty of other "Jack" stations across the country, including WCJK in Nashville, operated by South Central Broadcasting.

I like listening to news-talk AM 1160 KSL out of Salt Lake City. They also simulcast on 102.7 FM and actually promote the station with the FM first and then AM 1160. In the past, I believe that they were in the top 5 in the ratings, for the greater Salt Lake City area. Don't forget all the new adult listeners KXNT will pick up listening on FM tuners on MP3 and IPODS...

The PPM average for April to June books was #1 12+ and #3 25-54. The 25-54 showing is quite a bit higher than was usual for the station prior to the simulcast.
 
Slowly but surely, it's moving eastward! I know that CBS' JACK in Chicago isn't doing well. Right now, WBBM Newsradio 780 is on that station's HD-2 signal. Another JACK that could be ripe for a flip. Fresh isn't doing well in Chicago either and there has been speculation that it could be flipped to a simulcast with sports WSCR.

Once it gets to Chicago, watch for WFAN (sports) and WCBS-AM (news) to simulcast on FM in NY. Sooner or later, I think it's inevitable. :)

I'm sorry, I'm not trying to be rude but really, people who listen to that sports crap on the radio don't know what good radio is. Why in the world are all these AMs turning to FM? They should stay on AM - more signal coveage anyways. Looks like the Vegas is going to be even more crappier than it already is.

But no one will care. And for the record I have never heard any talk or sports radio in any office building or hotel, including the Las Vegas ones.

Spoken word formats (all-news, news/talk, sports) that have migrated to FM have not only increased their ratings, they have also increased ad revenue. The 25-54 market advertisers covet does not listen to AM, no matter how powerful the signal. That market grew up listening to FM. :)
