Hits That Never Get Played on Radio Any More

I never visited the Quonset Inn -- but I'm curious to know if this was an actual Quonset hut.

Not to change the subject (although we could start a new thread) but there seems to be an Upstate NY thing about using Quonset huts for radio stations. WBRV in Boonville, the WKRT/WIII transmitter building in Cortland, the former WNTQ (aka WFBL-FM and WDDS) transmitter building and the WAQX transmitter building come to mind -- and I believe WAER's studio also occupied such a prefab. Any others you can think of?

Freda had another record on Invictus in '71, "Bring The Boys Home"...sold a million copies according to Whitburn...doesn't negate the story, I'm just wondering why some label accountant didn't just write it off.

Freebird, I was at WIII/WKRT from '83/'86, back when it was Burbach-owned OK-100. Never went to the tower site, remember it was on Greek Peak though.
 
The WWHG (WHHO) Hornell transmitter shack was a Quonset too - at least it was in 1967-68. I know the tower was replaced in the 80s but I don't know if they kept the half-can or built a new enclosure.
 
Don't think it's been listed but I've been up 20 hours....Java by Al Hirt.

At Valpo Tech, there was a Quonset Hut used for a lunchtime canteen.
But it was defunct by the time I attended. :(
It was called "The Hut".

Actually, it was. They were on Fairport Road a few miles east of Rochester and were known basically for their juicy/greasy cheeseburgers and crinkle-cut fries. Think Don's Original, Schaller's or Tom Wahl's and you get the idea. Then someone put a Mickey D's across the street, and that was that...I guess it kind of went the same way as local radio...gave way to the national cookie-cutter formula. :(

The restaurant's long gone but the building's still there, last I checked...I think it was part of a home improvement/hardware store.
 
Quonset huts were cheap and durable during the post-WW2 period. Lots of people had experience with them from the service. Any surprise that they found their way into the broadcasting business?

But, to get back to the topic, when was the last time you heard Howard Jones "Things Can Only Get Better" or "Only the Lonely" by the Motels on the radio?

Bread? Can't remember the last time that I heard Bread on the radio. Ditto The Carpenters. Must not test well. Oddly, I've seen it get great response at large gatherings - OK, weddings & banquets - from a wide age range.

I feel like that kind of music - at least for radio - has gained the perception of old-time "MOR"...with all the baggage implied therein. Sad...they were all great songs and sounded awesome in the Top 40 mix of that day (especially when Jeff Kaye and Debaser were the delivery agents). "Goodbye To Love" is the missing link between "Bridge Over Troubled Water" and "Mandy", literally inventing the power ballad. I'd never want a whole format of this stuff but when sprinkled in...tasty!

Love Is Like Oxygen still gets some play (lunar rotation) at classic hits AOR stations.

Here's one we used to play at KB that probably hasn't been heard much since then:

Timmy Thomas-Why Can't We Live Together (diamonds in the back...of the Cadillac...)

And one that should never have been heard to begin with: Clint Homes-Playground in My Mind
