Hits That Never Get Played on Radio Any More

This thread seems to have morphed into "Songs That Should Be Played On The Radio." Gonna be about 90 degrees in The Nickel today. Here's a song from a singer and group that were equally hot. I remember hearing it on WPHD Buffalo and a KDAY aircheck, where a black, classic soul-jock talked up the intro with one of the smoothest discographies I ever heard. The horn section combines the energy of Chicago with the zesty funk of Tower of Power. IMHO this is a far better than Foghat's cuz "It's double the funk / To rattle your junk." Savor the flavor of Lydia Pense and Cold Blood "I Just Want to make Love To You." Stay cool.

3 Dog Night-Out In The Country, Shambala

Also "The Show Must Go On" and "Let Me Serenade You" (one of the best produced pop records of the era)

And anytime we play "Joy To The World" it MUST be the original 45 mix...it was the shortest version but it was the only one with a guitar solo and a true party feel all other versions missed.

I tried my dangest to get this through "testing". Never worked. What's wrong with these people? :D

when you're talking cheese..they don't get cheesier than Christopher Cross "Ride Like The Wind" or "Sailing".

As long as we're talking about Best New Artist Grammy winners, what about Rickie Lee Jones-Chuck E.'s In Love?

And to think NARAS is changing the rules 'cuz Lady GaGa couldn't qualify under the old rules...

Then again considering the Starland Vocal Band, Debby Boone, Milli Vanilli, Amy Winehouse and Christopher Cross were all Best New Artist winners...maybe GaGa should be careful what she wishes for :).

Does anyone play Three Dog Night's "One Man Band" or "Liar" anymore?

I'd play this one on my I-pod....if I had one.

(yes, truth be told..I don't own one. Why?...because then I couldn't blame the technology here on RI!! ;D...but in reality, my CD player works just fine!! - guess I gotta pick up the 3DN CD now, huh? :D)

That's all

"Another great song that never gets played: "Cinnamon Girl" by Neil Young"

Except classic rockers like WCMF and Fox 95.1 seem to have it almost in hot rotation, or whatever comes closest to hot rotation on a classic rocker. That may have been one of the first real album rock "hits" of the early 70s, which never got a whole lot of traction as a single (although there is a 45 version of it) but got a boatload of AOR play and eventually became a classic rock mainstay.

Okay..I liked "Natural High" by Bloodstone..
"Keeper of the Castle" Four Tops (on ABC-Dunhill not Motown)
"Nothing But A Heartache" The Flirtations (most compressed recrod EVER)
"Westbound #9" Flaming Ember
"It Only Takes a Minute" Tavares
"Son of My Father" Georgio
"The Horse" Cliff Nobles and Co.
and a couple regional hits:
"song" The Seven
"Give Me One More Chance" Wilmer and the Dukes

Jeff, good to note "Keeper Of The Castle" was the Four Tops debut on ABC-Dunhill...right around the time they experimented with the building blocks logos...which only lasted 6 months or so.

The two follow-ups probably qualify for this thread: "Ain't No Woman"(Like The One I've Got) and "Are You Man Enough".

BJ Thomas (with the Beach Boys)-Rock and Roll Lullabye
Every Mother's Son-Come On Down To My Boat
Cat Mother and The All Night Newsboys-Rock and Roll (brought up at lunch yesterday on a movie set by a fellow background performer who likes obscure hits).

Cripple Creek, The Shape I'm In or Time To Kill. Pick one. This flashback influenced by listening to the great WKBW jingle package and hearing a cut based on the intro to Cripple Creek which features the Jaw Harp. I'd forgotten that cut. And as usual, I can't help but hear Armstrong doing his shtick whenever I listen to the jingle that sounds like Chicago's classic, "Beginnings." Now that's powerful imaging. Not to hi-jack the thread, but do you think radio will ever be that "fun" again? Yeah, i know there are a million diversions these days and all that. Just askin'.
