Hits 1 is kind of fun to listen to because they do follow their own path, per se. They always have at least 4 or 5 currents that most CHR's aren't playing or that peaked in the lower rung of the charts. Sometimes some of these tracks are pretty cool though and deserve to be heard.
I've always kind of had a theory as to why they program this way. Hits 1 tends to lean to the rock side and adult side IMO. Also, most of the "stiffs" that they play that other CHR's don't are also rock leaning most of the time. My guess has always been that satellite radio is most popular and most heavily used in the rural/heartland type areas of the country where people are underserved, and where they often have long commutes to work. And those areas have always been the most rock friendly. I think Sirius realizes this and therefore they program Hits 1 as if it was targeted to a heartland market in the midwest or non-coastal south. I think that's why you hear lower charting, rock leaning tracks getting much more emphasis (Things like "Bartender Song" by Rehab, "100 in a 55" by Pop Evil, "Careless Whisper" by Seether, etc.) All of these kind of stiffed at most large market CHR's, but they were played extensively on Hits 1. They even add some oddball country crossovers at times too, like Darius Rucker's "Allright", which is in their top 30 tracks right now.
While this may sound like a mess to most listeners in large metro areas, it actually connects with Joe Blow in Toadstool, Kansas, etc. And this was actually quite common back in the 80's, before radio was gobbled up by the large corporations and all the playlists became more "cookie cutter" and "one size fits all". There are still a few stations that play tracks like this that appeal to their specific markets. (WAEZ "Electric 94.9" Tri Cities, TN/VA comes to mind. Pop Evil's "100 in a 55" and Seether's "Careless Whisper" were both top 5 there recently, just as they were on Hits 1, even though most major market CHR's considered them stiffs).
Anyway, that's just my take on what's going on at Hits 1, and where some of their programming ideas may be coming from. I kind of agree, though that they really should add either "20 on 20" or "Kiss" to Sirius though for a more balanced selection. That way , you could have Hits 1 focused on the heartland, and 20 on 20 or Kiss aimed more at a large market, mainstream sound.
