Hitz 94 Greensboro

Will Hitz 94 every setup a tower in charlotte? I really like that station, but their signal is very weak. They plays 80s music better than 107.9 the link. They also do not repeat the same songs over and over.

Hitz 94 in the "Triad" (studio in High Point and licensed to Lexington with poor signal over parts of Guilford County due to Sunny 93.9 and a directional signal) will stay with their Davidson County tower near US 52 at Midway. The deal to move the station to Rowan County also included selling the station to Billy Graham. It would've been 106.9/94.1 The Light, with a Religious Format for Charlotte, Hickory and Winston-Salem.
______________

So that CP is going to lapse? *whew*

Hmmm...

I thought their studio was co-located with sister station 1440 WLXN in Lexington.

There are two reasons the new tower hasn't been constructed. One, residents of the Rowan County town (Mt Ulla) where the tower was to be located protested to the County Commission and the County developed a moratorium on all tower construction in the county. There were also questions about the tower being located too close to Miller Air Park, a grass air strip some five miles from the proposed tower.

I understand an effort has been made to try to move the tower's location across the County line into Iredell. Iredell County would like to build a communications tower in the Southern part of the County for a new trunking two way system.

We'll have to wait and see...

Their Studio has been in High Point for a few years now. They haven't had much success with that signal. The move to Charlotte is complicated by shortspacing issues and an airport neighborhood. Keep in mind: 94.1 + 10.6 = 104.7 and that's North Charlotte. WTHZ-C1 can't be within 41 miles of the University City area of Charlotte (where Lowes Motor Speedway and UNC-Charlotte are) thanks to WKQC-C. Downtown Salisbury is about 30 miles from WKQC's tower. There's also a 94.1 in Cross Hill, South Carolina. You can hear it from I-85 in Greenville. They must stay at least 200 miles from the Greenwood, SC area. They can't be with-in 105 miles of B-93.7 also. From what I've heard, their proposed Rowan County site is as close as they can get to the Cross Hill signal. That's why they are going with the big tower and small signal. If they do move, this station won't sound that great in Pineville, South Charlotte, Rock Hill or fast growing Union County. Remember 104.7 will give them signal problems as well. I'm guessing signal strength will be similar to WFMX, but at a lower power, they will have trouble getting that signal inside large buildings. They should leave it where it is and sell to Salem, if they want a "Christian" owner. A 94.1 The Fish would do better than the old "94.1 The Dove" did. Salem has the money and people to make it work. I like the Fish here in Atlanta. It's a very good station and would work well with Triad families. WBFJ is nothing more than a Winston-Salem station. You can't serve a market the size of the Triad with translators.
______________

Thanks for the info. I always wondered why Hitz never had a strong signal in Guilford and Randolph counties despite being "just over the county line". Also, 'splains why Hitz can't move to the Level Cross tower farm. Hmmmmmmmmm.

This being said, I don't know that any format will fly on 94.1 in the Triad. A change to Christian would address a need, but with the same old signal limitations. Heck , from Western Randolph you can get 106.9 almost as clearly as 94.1.

There's also a shortspacing with 94.5 in the Triad. They can't go north due to 94.5 in Eden and they can't go east due to 93.9 in Burlington. They can't go too far to the south due to 104.7 in north Charlotte and another 94.1 in the SC Upstate.

When I lived in Winston-Salem, 94.1 WWGL was so strong, you could hear it through the TV on two channels and I had cable. It played through the middle of the AM dial. I also once heard it on my computer speakers and the computer was turned off. If you live in Winston-Salem, you can't listen to 94.5, unless you have a very good tuner. Back when 94-5 The Rock Alternative was on Fifth Street in Downtown Winston-Salem, you could stand outside the studios of 94.5 and look inside, but you couldn't listen to them on the radio outside their studio. 94.5 has the same problems 94.1 has. 94.5 has a terrible directional signal and shortspacing problems in Winston-Salem due to 94.1. It's the same with WIST. WBRF blocks WIST in Winston-Salem. WBRF also gives WIST problems in parts of Greensboro. I do remember 106.9 The Light having good signal when I lived in Winston-Salem and Charlotte. WMIT was once licensed to Winston-Salem from that tower location! The Light has excellent signal in both cities. They should look to investing in translators if they feel they need to improve coverage. 94.1's coverage of Charlotte will be the same as their coverage of the eastern Triad if they move to Rowan County. There's not much open on the dial in Charlotte for translators though.

Some of you have talked about WAGI moving in. 105.3 is blocked from moving-in by 104.7 also. I think they are already shortspaced in their current grandfathered location?
______________

Re: CCM 94.1 The Light

The office they have in High Point is just a sales office, the studios are not located there. The studios are still co-located with WLXN on Business 85 on the north side of Lexington.

The short answer is no. A not so short answer is cash.
All the other posts have covered the tower, and shortspace concerns.

The signal problems have really hurt them in the latest round of ratings.

There's also a 12 kW 105.3 (WBRW) in Blacksburg, VA. I don't know if that'd be short-spaced, or would fall within normal spacing, but they're on Price's Mountain outside of town.

Furthermore, there's a 25.5 kW class B on 94.1 in Oak Hill, WV, that fights against Hitz 94 all over Blacksburg (Duran Duran vs. Carole King...what a battle ;-) ) Again, I don't know how that would stack up, but it probably can't help.

Finally, there's a full-powered 93.9 that is licensed to Marion, VA (aka Bristol), that according to R-L, casts a "fringe" signal to well inside Hitz' coverage area.

I'd say Hitz is pretty much locked in, and it doesn't look too good for WAGI either (although during the past heatwave, they were blasting into Greensboro).
