'HJJ in sorry shape

Yeah.. it was a playa in 1986. Now it's all played out. I think they are starting to get better though.
if they really wanna get better they need to hire some people and do a little more than 2 hrs or local programming a day.....

In the 1980's and early 90's HJJ was a player. They had an all-news format in morning drive, followed by local talk from 9 a.m. until 6 or 7 p.m.

Ron St. Pierre was PD until late 80's when he jumped to PRO. John Carpilio was then PD, and continued as News Director as well until he left for Metro Networks in late 90's. Between them, they had a talk show lineup that included at various times, the late (legendary) Sherm Strickhouser, Steve Kass, Steve White, Buddy Cianci and Arlene Violet.

From late 90's when Carpilio jumped to Metro, until Bill Hess arrived, HJJ went into a black hole. Hess rebuilt what various corporate ownerships had taken apart. Remember during the Cianci trial, with DePetro and Violet broadcasting from outside the courthouse, and Carpilio (a Metro employee at that point) leaving the courtroom and providing updates during every break? They kicked PRO's butt. That was orchestrated by Hess. Hess was also the one who took a chance on DePetro. Since he departed, Clear Channel has dismantled everything again.

For those of you who are too young to remember, at one time PRO vs. HJJ was like Red Sox vs. Yankees. It was very competitive. It was good radio. I think it was an extraordinary time for a market the size of Providence. The listeners were the winners.

Now? From a local perspective, HJJ is sad, and PRO has no competition. The listeners lose.

HJJ is in sorry shape, because they fired 15 or more people last year at this time , but the one that needs to be fired is still in charge, Jim Corwin. WPRO is way ahead because most Rhode Island talk listeners want local talk. Jim Corwin knows that, he just doesn't care. HJJ is sad. They are totally leaderless and lost in a self made fog. If Helen Glover would do an Ask the Manager show , can you imagine the calls?

Y'know...it's not really even Mr.Corwin. Budgets are handed down from the mount..er, corporate. People are told not only how much there is to spend on a particular station, but also (virtually) what to spend it on. Line items define how many news people; how many local hosts; whether or not certain positions even exist. I'm not defending Corwin...his previous track record with HJJ speaks for itself. I'm just saying that when cuts come they are spelled out, to a large extent. The point they ponder is this: Do you make more money spending on 'local-local-local' in an effort to get ratings that can then be sold....or by slashing back to syndication. You may get lower ratings and bill less with the second scenario - but is, perhaps, the profit actually higher? The thing that worries me is that cuts have been so very deep already - where does the new ownership take their pound of flesh when the "merger" (buyout) goes through?

Whjj offered Buddy Cianci well over 200,000 dollars. Wpro offered Buddy 300,000.
200,000 in salaries gives Whjj a full slate of in state hosts with money left over. Don't believe thier lies.

I think that is becoming more apparent by the day. Once he started his gig at WPRO everyone got very quiet about Buddy. He's not nearly as interesting when there is no longer controversy surrounding him. He should burn somebody with a cigar. Ratings would go up.

Tonight I spoke with a Citadel employee, even they acknowledge the Buddy is a shocking disappointment. Not what they expected when they layed down the big bucks. Pretty much everyone except Wknd is in agreement.

Would love to see Helen at WPRO, leave the ones who are paid to be pro administration continue on their merry way on WHJJ
