In the 1980's and early 90's HJJ was a player. They had an all-news format in morning drive, followed by local talk from 9 a.m. until 6 or 7 p.m.
Ron St. Pierre was PD until late 80's when he jumped to PRO. John Carpilio was then PD, and continued as News Director as well until he left for Metro Networks in late 90's. Between them, they had a talk show lineup that included at various times, the late (legendary) Sherm Strickhouser, Steve Kass, Steve White, Buddy Cianci and Arlene Violet.
From late 90's when Carpilio jumped to Metro, until Bill Hess arrived, HJJ went into a black hole. Hess rebuilt what various corporate ownerships had taken apart. Remember during the Cianci trial, with DePetro and Violet broadcasting from outside the courthouse, and Carpilio (a Metro employee at that point) leaving the courtroom and providing updates during every break? They kicked PRO's butt. That was orchestrated by Hess. Hess was also the one who took a chance on DePetro. Since he departed, Clear Channel has dismantled everything again.
For those of you who are too young to remember, at one time PRO vs. HJJ was like Red Sox vs. Yankees. It was very competitive. It was good radio. I think it was an extraordinary time for a market the size of Providence. The listeners were the winners.
Now? From a local perspective, HJJ is sad, and PRO has no competition. The listeners lose.
