So....does Corwin go after David to replace the hapless, Bill George over at 920?

HJJ could really use Bernstein. Bill George is impotent, hapless, and clueless.
If Bernstein did go to HJJ, how would he deal with Arlene? She runs the show.
Corwin likes puppets, thats what George is. I would guess Bernstein wouldn`t go to HJJ. Doesn`t want to be controled. Can`t blame him for that. I`ve heard he may retire.

If David Bernstein were to move over to WHJJ, there is one thing he could probably do to make the station much more popular.

WHJJ is A Clear Channel Property, and is under the same corporate ownership as Premiere Radio Networks. Premiere is the syndicator of Rush Limbaugh, George Noory, Glenn Beck, and Phil Hendrie, plus Matt Drudge on weekends. Limbaugh, Noory, and Drudge are currently heard on WPRO-630; I don't think Beck and Hendrie are heard in Providence at the moment.

Bernstein, if he were to go to WHJJ, probably could request Clear Channel and Premiere to pull Limbaugh and Noory off of WPRO, move them to WHJJ, and also pick-up Beck and Hendrie, who have done well in other markets.

I think that were Limbaugh to move to WHJJ, it would within a few months result in WHJJ ovbertaking WPRO to become Providence's dominant talk station.

As it is, WPRO is going to take a ratings hit next Spring because it will no longer broadcast Boston Red Sox games. If Bernstein were to move to WHJJ and get CC to use it's muscle and move it's (through Premiere) syndicated shows off WPRO and onto WHJJ, WPRO would be hurt even worse.

Agree it'd be wise to grab Bernstein, he's not retiring, Let him fix WHJJ..

disagree about Rush. He's no powerhouse in RI - DePetro used to beat him. HJJ doesn't need Bernstein so much as it needs a commitment to being smart. That would be a big change.

How much of a crony factor enters into the picture on Oxford Street when it comes to new jobs matched with old faces?

Also any chance of Ron St Pierre getting the PD gig at WPRO again? If Bernstein's exit was a money matter it could be a solution. It was an unusual circumstance for him to give up the programming a few years back but stay on with the station anyway.

All i can say is thank god none of you are PD's

Its a shame WHJJ bailed on progressive radio...but Providence and Boston do not need more conservative radio....at all. My god, as i posted on the Boston forum, you have the ability to hear Hannity, Limbaugh, crazy Savage, etc. What else do you want...my god? An alternative is more suitable for the providence area.

Enough is enough....im not sure where WHJJ is going now....but we don't need more conservative clap-trap. Providence needs other hosts....or other formats and we must have a station that will commit to counterprogramming the the vast wasteland of conservative radio....with progressive radio or frankly anything else at this point BUT conservative radio. Providence, like Boston needs some fresh views/voices on its airwaves...not the tired, repetive musings of conservative radio.

Bernstein may not be interested in doing anything in Providence. He was commuting to PRO from his New Jersey home. Perhaps he's looking for something closer to home -- maybe NY or Philly?

Doc6494,Enough with the liberal whinning!

Wanting an alternative is not whining!

Ill not try to debate the misconceptions you have about the current media situation (better for off-the-air than here) but not wanting two conservative stations in Providence when we already have one in Providence and two more within listening range in Boston is not whining.....

Sorry, but there are other people, other formats, and new voices that are best heard than not heard.....even if they arent progressive.

As someone who used to work at 'HJJ I felt compelled to write. I don't know David Bernstein but I do know it doesn't matter who the PD is at the station. Until ClearChannel is willing to spend some money on the station it will continue to play second fiddle to 'PRO-AM.
ClearChannel has set up a system of too few people doing too many jobs. Inevitably, things (such as promotions, news, sales, etc) fall through the cracks. Corporate's only response is, "Who cares? We're still saving money so just clean it up and keep on going".
The news department is a perfect example. They don't have the staff to handle their own news, let own act as the "news hub" for stations in Springfield and New Haven. That's why some other CC stations told corporate to take a flying leap and re-stocked their own news departments. Not only do they not have enough staff but the pay is so low only Sharon Smith has any real news experience. The rest might as well be learning at the Columbia School of Broadcasting.
Bill George is doing the best he can with what he has, just as those who've tread before him along the darkened hallways of 'HJJ. God help them.
