I consider myself a great fan of 'HJY, and I applaud CC for keeping the station local. Its personalities are lengendary, and I still love listening to it.
However, perhaps a reason for its slip has to do with its musical changes. I understand that the music has been focused for the PPM era, but the music is just not what it was. The playlist has tightened beyond anything I could have imagined. The music is so Classic Rock-heavy that I would not longer call the station an AOR station; I'd describe it more as Classic Rock AC. They play Journey more than they play Ozzy. And while they mix in maybe one relatively current song per hour, such songs have been chosen because they have more of a Classic Rock - rather than Alternative - sound. That Red Hot Chili Peppers song - the name escapes me - is a good example.
The jocks - outside of Charles and Paul and Al - have also been forced to follow the PPM rules. The only topics on which they speak are the artists and concerts. Gone is the era in which 'HJY's jocks told stories or shared anecdotes. The sad part is that 'HJY's line-up - weekends included - are the most talented group in all of Providence radio. In fact, they are more talented than just about any lineup in the Boston market.
I know the PPM followers will tell me I am wrong, but I wonder what would happen if CC just "let 'HJY be 'HJY again." Unfortunately, 'HJY might never be allowed to be 'HJY again.
