With the Christmas music on 94.9, Cox had 4 of the top 7 stations, and those stations had nearly 1/3 of the total share for the market (around 37% for all 6 of their FMs).... by comparison CC totaled about 28% and CBS about 18%.

Highest rated competitor? WUSF with a 1.5.....

Genesis fails to reach a 1-share combined with 3 stations.

Interestingly, both WFLZ and its new rival WPOI were at a 5.8 in the November book. WPOI has since lost .6 in each of the next two books, while WFLZ lost no more than a .5 over that span. Maybe the demo they're targeting is into holiday hits, I don't know...

#5... country listeners like Christmas music. US103.5 would also be hurt by a bad Bucs season.

#1....The launch of Hot 105 killed any chance of Play gaining traction as an alternative to 'FLZ. Add that to the competition from AC's Mix and Magic, and WSJT's smaller signal.

#4 WWRZ doesn't provide full market penetration. However over in Lakeland and Winter Haven the loss of "The Point" caused ratings to jump for a 2.2 last spring to a 3.6 this fall. If Clear Channel really wanted to get the former WPOI listeners they could put Adult Hits on 97.9.

#5 Country music sadly has been in decline for a while. The ratings for WPCV have stayed steady though.

#3 Unfortunately Public Radio shares listeners with just about every other format. Especially with the News Format on WUSF. People listen to the news and then flip it back to another station for music, I can't speak for WMNF however.

3) WMNF and WUSF are very low. Why?

WUSF is low compared to other public stations around the country. Public stations in markets such as Seattle, Raleigh and San Francisco are near the top of their Arbs. Reason? Probably education levels. San Antonio and Houston also have public stations in the basement. The NPR format doesn't work in low-education-level markets like this one. The natives are dropouts and the retirees from elsewhere prefer the classical music.

WMNF, on the other hand, outperforms its Pacifica/community radio class. It's ratings ratio to WUSF is probably one of the strongest for a community - vs - full time NPR station in the country. KPFA have as high a ratio to KQED, for instance. WBAI certainly doesn't come as close to WNYC. The reason there may be that Pacifica-type grass-roots left-wing radio has more appeal to blue-collar types than NPR. Tampa is more of a blue-collar (or no collar) town that has a history of supporting left-leaning talk that is blustery or militant as opposed to effete and pretentious -- Bob Lassiter comes to mind. Bottom line, WUSF is underperforming with NPR talk, WMNF is overperforming for what its type of station normally does in the numbers.
