Holiday Music Programming

Are any other stations besides Star switching to Christmas music these days?

From what I recall this used to happen after Thanksgiving but it seems to me that it happens earlier and earlier.

Does it provide a ratings bump or has this idea fizzled out for the other stations?

Thoughts???

Hubbard always flips 94.9's HD2 into Christmas music. Looks like they did it a few days ago. And then Warm will be soon to follow.

My question is who's going to be Dayton's holiday station? It used to be 106.5 before they were donated. I would assume 92.9 and/or 107.7 but I don't recall either one playing Xmas music before December 24th.

Warm always does their flip in correlation with Festival of Lights opening weekend at the Zoo, IIRC. The Festival opens this week, so I’d expect Warm to flip by Friday night at the latest.

As for Dayton, I’d expect 100.7 to flip to a Christian artist-heavy Christmas format as they’ve done in recent years. But on the secular side, I wouldn’t even know who to guess, though I’d think someone will. 107.7 has done it before but it’s been a number of years ago. I don’t think 92.9 has done it since switching to Jack

Dayton and Atlanta are unique radio markets. No secular station flips to all-Christmas music. That's odd considering the Christmas format is so popular. Some markets have two or even three major FM stations switch to Christmas tunes every November.

Is there any ratings data from past years to see if there is a bump from the switch?

Of course there is. You think they do this because they like the music? It's all about ratings. The bump is very dramatic and obvious:

The bells you hear are ka-ching!

Dayton will likely go another year without a dedicated (secular) all-Christmas station. Big 106.5 used to fill that role until it was acquired by Delvarma, and 103.9 briefly took up the mantle as a stunt between switching from alt-rock to country. But now, for the second or third(?) year in a row, the city is left without a go-to station for nonstop holiday cheer.

If Dayton were a PPM market, though, you can bet someone would jump on it.

I believe that Cincinnati's Star 93.3, with a tower north of downtown, throws a decent signal into Dayton proper. And, all of the south suburbs in Montgomery County. I've picked them up a far north as Piqua. Just sayin'.

I thought that they did it to avoid getting a lump of coal in their stockings ;)

Thanks for the info!

Are there any FM's in Dayton that would make a good temporary home for the Christmas format?? Or are there any AM's with a decent FM translator???
