Holiday Ratings - WRIT WOW!

Who would have guessed that WRIT would have a huge #1 showing in the Holiday Arbitrons. MYX does well, too, but a not-so-close #2. WTMJ takes a tumble to #4 from their usual #1 perch. When was the last time WRIT was #1 in Milwaukee?

Going strictly by memory as there are probably no rating books around to back up this statement....I would say this is the FIRST TIME WRIT has ever been #1 in Milwaukee. Back in the Top 40 days, WOKY was always the winner, hands down. The orginial WRIT on AM went away after failing at all news.

Was WOKY ever #1, even in the golden age of AM top 40? I remember seeing ratings in the 70s (Mike Drew's column in the Journal) and WTMJ was always #1.

Before Arbitron, in the days of Hooper and Pulse, in the 60's, WOKY was consistantly #1, often by wide margins. In the 70's, WTMJ took over leadership, mostly because of the sports play-by-play. Once in the early 80's, WBCS was #1, 12+.

That's interesting about about WOKY's dominance in the 60s. I suppose another reason why WTMJ took over #1 in the 70s is that AM Top 40 was at the start of it's decline as FMs started playing rock music.

I also recall WEZW was #1 in the early 80s, I believe the Spring 1982 book. This was when WISN carried Brewers PBP.

In the 60's and until the surge of FM in the early 70's, Milwaukee was a unique market in as much as it was in the Top 15 markets in the nation and had only 7 stations. WTMJ, WISN, WOKY, WRIT, WEMP, WFOX and WLUM. WOKY had some great talent and dominated the ratings during that time. In the early 70's, FM's started coming in and WOKY began to lose the young audience to the FM rockers. WRIT was never a great factor in ratings, but they had excellent PR that made lots of folks think the were better than they really were. In the late 70's and early 80's, with Arbitron showing different age groups and different day parts, several stations had good success. WEZW maintained strong older demo ratings. WZUU often surged up in younger demos. Paul Harvey was so strong at noon that WISN was generally #1 in the 10a-3p daypart. WBCS was very strong, generally #1, in the adult demo in most if not all dayparts.. WTMJ had good ratings over all, but the Brewers, Packers and Bucks gave them surges that kept them #1 overall. As I mentioned earlier, there was one book in '81 when WBCS with Dick and Ellen in the morning was#1, 12+ 6a-12mn, M-SU. Now, you know the rest of the story.....
