Holmgren press conference

All this nonsesne overreaction from the Cleveland media and fans to Holmgren speaking with a Seattle radio station yesterday led to Holmgren speaking with the local media today. How did the two all sports stations in town handle it.

WKNR carried it live while The Fan was not and the hosts were reading tweets on air. I've been critical of KNR as anyone, but kudos to airing it live. The Fan should be asking itself why they did not carry it live. We all assumed KNR was a nickel and dime operation, but they cam through today for the Cleveland sports fan. The Fan....not so much

With the "Cleveland Browns Daily" pseudo-brokered deal, the Browns probably gave WKNR that level of access. After all, the team built a studio for WKNR in the first place because of that deal.

For what it's worth, WTAM didn't carry it, either. (Neither did WTAM carry the statement by President Obama at 2PM.) Not sure if the team's flagship station, WMMS, bothered to carry it. If that was the case, it could have been spillover coverage on KNR's part.

The team's 2 flagships, (WTAM/WMMS) stayed with Rush and rock, respectively. They probably could have aired it if they wanted to, but didn't deem it that important.

As Nate said, KNR has some access due to "Browns Daily"

The Fan probably couldn't air it live due to KNR's "Browns Daily" dibs.

And that's quite a change from the past, when WKNR was the station on the outside looking in at Berea, while this stuff ran only on WTAM/WMMS!

Yes, I agree...the "Browns Daily" deal probably put WKNR in the access business in Berea. Despite the fact they gave up 6-7 PM for a team infomercial (albeit not really a bad one), they gain on the back end.

In the end, I'm not sure it mattered that the Holmgren fest wasn't carried live on either The Fan or on WTAM or WMMS. Holmgren stepping down? Sure. There was news coming out of this, but nothing that couldn't wait until later...and 92.3's "Bull and Fox" carried it (recorded) with extensive coverage in the middle of afternoon drive.

They broke it up into segments. Maybe a more "radio friendly" option than just running it live, allowing the listeners to weigh in between each segment.

If there was significant breaking news out of the presser, that's another matter. But it was just Holmgren smoothing over some Cleveland feathers after the whole Seattle interview thing...I'm not sure it matters that it ran at 2, 3 or 4 PM.

I do think it was a good thing for 'KNR to run it live (and would still have been great for The Fan to do so, should they have been allowed). Though 'KNR probably got a lot of calls from the Rome Heads...

Of course, if Holmgren had fired Pat Shurmur, both The Fan and WTAM/WMMS would have broken fingers getting that on the air live. :D

But we knew that wasn't gonna happen.

Most sports press conferences are a complete bore in this town that is why most of the stations did not air them live. The sports reporters in this town want to be pals with the executives so they ask softball questions. They also want to make sure they get their invitation to the team Christmas party and end of the season party. Can anyone think of a sports anchor in town who asks really tough questions at press conferences? John Telich, Mike Snyder, Andy Baskin are so Vanilla that Vanilla ice cream thinks they are plain. Jim Donovan is not going to ask any tough questions of the Browns because they employ him. ::)

Assuming any Rome clones still bother to listen to 850. (Tough to tell, Rome and tRBS are bunched together into the same 10a-3p ratings daypart).

Interm, you'll have to help me out on this one.

You start by calling it overblown nonsense, then chastise a station for not covering it?

So which is it? Just askin'.

It's simple, not tough to tell! ::) Arbitron's Maximi$er provides the creation of custom dayparts..........in this case ( RBS vs Rome ) you just create 2 custom dayparts...namely 10a-1p vs 1p-3p. Does WKNR even subscribe to Arbitron? If you don't have Maximi$er you can only guess....or rely on your " listener surveys " LOL!

I think it was overblown because of the media in this town and them failing to realize Holmgren has a long realtionship with that station in Seattle. that said, because it did become a big deal, both all sports stations should have aired it live. As some have mentioned, KNR had the logicitical advantage in airing it.

Another question for those guys in the know.....do either of the Browns beat reporters at both station travel to raod games. I don't think either station sent anyone to the road games this year. I know you need money for that, but I find it strange.

No and no.

Both Will Burge (WKNR) and Darryl Ruiter (WKRK) stay home for most road trips.

Though they will go/have gone to Pittsburgh and Cincy when they play there because they're short trips that can be done by car. Burge also got sent to nearby Indy when the Browns played the Colts (don't recall if Ruiter went, but it wouldn't surprise me if he did).

I can gaurentee though they won't be making the roadie out to Frisco this week,
